After the pledge of allegiance and invocation the Owenton City Council, with Mayor Adam Gaines, presiding over members present, heard from RebelsOut Reach representatives Kayleigh Gibson and Brennen Lewis, who spoke about the upcoming community service project.

Gibson and Lewis shared with the council the OutReach date has been set for May 4 and applications are open for service requests from the community.

“I want to thank the kids, you all do an excellent job each year,” said Gaines to Lewis and Gibson.

Chief Clint Aldridge was in training and unable to attend the meeting. Mayor Gaines announced on behalf of the department that Billy Cammack had been hired as the new police officer starting July 1 and will go to the police academy in September.

Fire Chief Greg Estes reported 28 runs for the month of March, 17 of which were related to the Carrollton Utilities gas line work that was being completed within the city limits and one structure fire on Rose Bourne Lane that resulted in a total loss.

Estes shared with the council the fire department will hold its inaugural l fish fry May 11.

“The department will have fish, frog legs, BBQ, for $15 a meal will include one main dish, sides and a drink,” said Estes. Funds raised will be used to purchase equipment for the department.

A drain flooding issue on Kelly Court was reported by Public Works Director Timmy DeZarn. Upon investigation the city was not liable for the damage reported by the homeowner but would look into drain matter.

The Spring Business Grant is open, and 56 applications have been hand-delivered. As stated on the application “The city would like to see this grant used to improve the appearance of your business.” One grant of $1,000 will be awarded with applications due by April 30. The winner will be announced at the May 9 council meeting.
