  • Drug war is worth fighting

I was talking to our good sheriff, Zemer Hammond, about this time a year ago, give or take a little either way. Zemer and a trooper was checking out an incident that happened just across the street from where I live. Our sheriff looked up at me and he said, “Hank, drugs are ruining this county.” I could not agree with him more, except for one little detail.

  • Local government doing a good job in bad weather

The road crews, city and county officials are doing an excellent job in seeing that the country roads and the city streets are being cleared of snow and ice.
Keep up the good work as it is deeply appreciated.

  • Blame for shooting is in the hand of the gunman

I’ve been listening to the radio about this tragic killing in Arizona.
From what I’m hearing, there was a rush to assign blame.
First it was Sarah Palin and the Tea Party to blame.
But wait, the (suspect) did not have any connection with Palin or the Tea Party.
In fact, to the best of my knowledge, the (alleged) killer was not a fan or supporter of any elected official. Come to think about it, why kill a 9-year-old if it was a political statement of some kind?

  • Patient grateful for ambulance service

This letter is to let the boys at the ambulance service know just how much I appreciated the birthday cake that they made for me. It was a surprise to receive it, and it was very good.
I want to let you know that I love you guys very much and truly appreciate the service that you are providing for all Owen County residents.
    Thanks again,
    Frances Caldwell

  • Anger is growing across the country

First, my condolences to the families of those dead and injured in the Arizona shooting.
The mean-spiritedness in this country is worse than I’ve ever seen in my lifetime (I’m 72) especially in the political arena.
We need to question where the anger is coming from and what can be done to change it.
I’ve always felt that America would have to endure another revolution and didn’t think I would live to see it, but I might be wrong. My only regret is that I might be too old to be a part of it.

  • Owen ambulance and hospital staff are the best around

On Dec. 8, 2010, my son found me passed out on my living room floor.
He immediately called the Owen County Life Squad who took excellent care of me (thank you, Brian and Charles) and dispatched for a helicopter to transport me to Lexington.
They then transported me to the New Horizons Medical Center Emergency Room.

  • Letter to the editor: Special thanks to hard-working school custodial staff

We are writing this letter to publicly thank the custodial staff of the Owen County School District for their dedication and faithful service to our schools and this community.
On Jan. 3,  the new Maurice Bowling Middle School opened to serve students. This was due to a lot of effort from many people, but this could not have happened without the custodial staff of this district.
