    They came on horseback, by wagons laden with worldly possessions, or on foot, driving a bony family cow over twisted trails.
    For many, the long wilderness trek from Virginia and the Carolinas ended among the rolling hills and winding creeks of what is today Owen County, Kentucky.

  • Hamilton honored by CPA organization

    Clint Hamilton was honored at the spring awards banquet of the Kentucky Society of Certified Public Accountants for having the highest scores in the state on both  the regulation and the auditing sections of the CPA exam during  the winter quarter.

    Harry Freibert, the president of the KYCPA, presented the awards. Hamilton received his master in accounting degree from the University of Kentucky in May and will be accepting a position with the accounting firm of CohnReznick in Atlanta, Ga. in October. Hamilton is a 2008 graduate of Owen County High School.

  • Get ready for back to school

    Ninth graders invited to Rebel Rally Aug. 8
    Owen County Youth Services Center would like to invite all incoming ninth-grade students to Rebel Rally on Aug. 8 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Owen County High School.
    Sessions will help students transition smoothly into high school.
    Parent session will be at 9:15 and 1:30. The cost is $6 and lunch is provided.
    Only those who preregister will get a T-shirt Lunch is provided.

  • Area pilot helps kids learn to fly

    An area pilot has now given more than 200 young people a free demonstration airplane ride as part of the Experimental Aircraft Association’s Young Eagles program, which is introducing a new generation to the world of flight.
    Among the more than 45,000 pilots around the world who have donated their time and aircraft to the effort is Joseph Sanchez of Jonesville,

  • Wedding announcement: Baczyk- Burton

    The wedding of Bryan Burton and Basha Baczyk will be celebrated with a special wedding shower July 13, 2013 at noon to 3 p.m. at the Owen County Extension Building. All friends and family are invited to attend and share this special time.

  • Kay’s Branch News: Lots of beauty in Owen

    I am typing to the sound of rain falling outside. We actually needed it this weekend. The farmers have managed to get their hay cut and rolled and from the looks of the hillsides I pass on the way to Owenton or Frankfort, it is plentiful this year.
    Gardens are being harvested.
    Fay, Lou Ann, Jean O’Banion and Jenny Banks are all canning beans and putting up corn.
    Wanda said she got some corn in the freezer this week too. She was nice enough to bring me a few ears. She and Fay are very good neighbors.

  • Middle school jumping into volleyball this fall

    Girls at Maurice Bowling Middles School will have another option when it comes to sports this year. The school will have a volleyball team this fall.
    The team will be coached by Ann Carter with Connie Shelton as the assistant coach. The team will have its first practice on July 22 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at MBMS.
    All girls are encouraged to come out and participate.
    Owen County High School Volleyball Coach T.J. Wesselman is excited about having a team where girls can play and learn the game at the middle-school level.

  • Crash snarls downtown traffic

    A tractor-trailer overturned at approximately 3:35 p.m. Friday afternoon, in front of Cowboys Market on Main Street. Police and emergency crews are on the scene. Police are investigating the cause of the accident and no injuries have been reported. The tractor-trailer also damaged a car parked along Main Street.
