  • Justin Shelton to continue career at Erskine College

    Former Runnin’ Rebel Justin Shelton signed a national letter of intent to play college basketball at Erskine College in Due West, S.C. The “Flying Fleet” are a member of the NCAA Division 2 and compete in Conference Carolinas. Shelton averaged 9 points, nine rebounds, two assists, and two blocks for Owen County in 2012-13; was All NCKC; and a member of back-to-back 31st District and Eighth Region All “A” championship teams.

    I can’t help but laugh when I think of the story I heard long ago about the young preacher’s visit with an elderly widow who, upset about losing her dentures, needed to be consoled.
    The preacher sat on the sofa and nibbled from a dish of peanuts on the end table while he tried to cheer her with the latest news about her church friends. Before long he realized he had made a real pig of himself and apologized to the woman for having eaten every last one of her peanuts.

  • Owen girl wins grant to help feed hungry kids

    Anna Riddle, a third-grade student from Owenton has been awarded a Disney Friends for Change Youth Grant through Youth Service America.
    The grant will support Riddle in leading a community service project for Global Youth Service Day.
    Service activities will take place on Global Youth Service Days - the largest volunteering and service event in the world.
    Riddle is using her grant to purchase food for Owen County Schools’ Power Pack Program – a program that sends food home with hungry children on the weekends, when school meals are not available.

  • Wife of suspect in murder case indicted

    One of the three men allegedly involved in the 2012 murder of a Franklin County man, along with his wife, are charged with tampering with physical evidence.
    According to the State-Journal, Joshua Hammond, 33 and his wife, Louanna Hammond, were charged after testimony from Travis Wright, a witness in the James Simons trial last month.
    Joshua Hammond, Simons, 37 and David Bruce II, 46, allegedly planned to rob Charles Monroe after buying prescription drugs from him May 5, 2012 in the Walmart parking lot on Leonardwood Drive in Frankfort.

  • City council moves ahead with pay hike for next mayor

    An ordinance that would raise the mayor’s salary for the City of Owenton was given a first reading Monday.
    If approved, the ordinance will raise the mayor’s salary from $12,000 to $18,000 per year and would allot for $300 per month in health and life benefits.
    The raise would not become effective until Jan. 1, 2015, following the Owenton mayoral race in November.

  • Owen grand jury hands down four indictments

    The Owen County grand jury handed down four indictments April 8.
    • Autumn L. Darrell, 21, on the charges of first-degree possession of a controlled substance, tampering with physical evidence and possession of drug paraphernalia.

    Sean E Armstrong, 1971, first-degree sexual abuse, first-degree sexual abuse victim under 12 years old, promoting a sexual performance by a minor under the age of 18, promoting a sexual performance by a minor under age of 18, promoting sex performance by minor under 16 years of age, continued to June 10.
    Robert James Craig, 1977, show cause deferred, owes $9,800 restitution, $500 restitution fee, to pay $100 a month, remand.
    William Anderson Currans II, 1984, probation violation, continued to April 22.
