    The Aug. 3 Leadership Owen County program opened with Dave Morgan, the chairman of the Owen County Tourism Commission. He spoke of the tourism commission and the importance of tourism in our state and county, and the benefits received.

    Adults, senior adults and their caregivers are invited to attend our annual health fair. Receive flu shots, vitals checks, medication reviews, healthy eating tips and diabetic and heart health education. You will also be treated to healthy snacks and be enrolled to win great door prizes. The event is from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. today (Wednesday).
    Bluegrass All Stars
     Decorate a plain drawstring backpack perfect for sporting gear, books or clothes. All school-age children welcome. The event begins at 3:15 p.m. today (Wednesday).

  • Owenton Rotary Club looks to boost membership

    The Owenton Rotary Club #3744 in District 6710 had their first meeting Aug. 19, 1925. This Preliminary meeting was held at the old Farmers National Bank. They were helped by and Sponsored by the Frankfort Club in June 1925, and the club was chartered on Sept. 8, 1925.  
    The first official meeting was held at the Nicholas Hotel on Oct. 2, 1925.  They had their meetings there until the hotel was closed in the 1960s.

  • Local Marathon offering U-Haul rentals

    U-Haul Company of Kentucky is pleased to announce that Owenton Marathon has signed on as a U-Haul neighborhood dealer to serve the Owenton community.
    Owenton Marathon at 105 S. Main St. will offer U-Haul trucks, trailers, towing equipment, support rental items, boxes and in-store pick-up for boxes.
    Hours of operation for U-Haul rentals are 24 hours a day, every day for customer convenience.

  • Owenton's spring cleanup

    The City of Owenton is having a spring cleanup, which runs from Monday, May 2 until Saturday, May 14. City residents may bring unwanted items to the Owen County Transfer Station for disposal free of charge, with the exception of household garbage and no more than four passenger-car tires.

  • Wedding announcement: Payton-Floyd

    Mr. and Mrs. Ronnie D. Riddle are proud to announce the engagement and forthcoming marriage of their daughter, Samantha Dawn Payton to Recko Recardoe Floyd. Floyd is the son of the late Sheila Floyd and Nelson Garcia of Homestead, Florida. The wedding will be held at 6:30 p.m., Saturday, July 5, 2014 at Monterey Baptist Church.

  • City council rejects pick for attorney

    Despite a push from Owenton Mayor Doug West for a fresh face in the city attorney’s position, a motion was not made in favor of local attorney Mitzy Evans.
    On Jan. 3, West told the News-Herald that he had chosen to not re-appoint Owenton’s longtime city attorney, Mark Cobb, saying he would recommend Evans to the position.
    The Owenton City Council must approve any nomination before the nominee can assume the role.
    The council met Jan. 4, where no motion to appoint Evans was made.
