A single-vehicle crash claimed the lives of two Owen County residents Friday.
Kentucky State Police Post 5 Campbellsburg received a call from an injury accident around 9:20 p.m. Owen County Sheriff’s Deputies Marvin Goodrich and Daniel Tracy were the first to arrive on scene at the Greenup Road entrance to Lucas Lane, where they found a black 2013 Chevy Impala resting on its top.
The driver, Kelvin Gabbard, 41, of 525 Davis Lake Road and the passenger, Rita Spencer, 47, of 2345 Greenup Road, were partially ejected from the vehicle. Goodrich said both Gabbard and Spencer were trapped in the vehicle and were pronounced dead at the scene by Owen County Coroner Mark Garnett.
The vehicle was traveling northbound on Greenup Road when it went off the roadway, causing the vehicle to go into an embankment. The vehicle continued off the roadway and into a rock culvert, causing it to flip, coming to a final rest on Lucas Lane. Gabbard was not wearing a seatbelt, Goodrich said.
Preliminary investigation indicates excessive speed may have been a factor. Toxicology reports are pending, according to Goodrich.
Goodrich and Tracy were assisted at the scene by Owen County Search and Rescue, the Owen County Volunteer Fire Department, the Monterey Volunteer Fire Department and Owen County EMS.
