Playing for a cause

Saturday was a great day for golf.
The 12th Annual Charlie Satterwhite Memorial Golf Shamble was held Saturday at Fairway Golf Course in Wheatley.
Windy and chilly conditions did not dampen the spirits of those who came to play golf and enjoy a good meal. The tournament raises money for the Satterwhite Fund which supports the Trust for Life Organ Donation Program. Some of the proceeds also go to help the Owen County Senior Citizens Activity Fund.
“It’s exciting to come around each year,” Billy O’Banion, who helps organize the event, said. “We think about him often, what he meant to the community.”
Many of the teams came dressed in blue and white and many of the conversations around the course focused on the University of Kentucky’s Final Four game later that evening.
O’Banion said Satterwhite, who was an avid golfer, might have passed up playing a game he loved to watch basketball.
“I think he would have played today, probably. He might not have stayed for the drawings,” O’Banion said “More likely, he would have been in Houston.”
Following a day on the golf course, participants were treated to a meal furnished by Rick Wilhoite and the ladies from the Owen County Senior Center. Some of the money raised Saturday will help them take their annual trip.
“Last year, we went to Pigeon Forge, Tenn., and did a lot of great things down there,” Lisa McBurney, director of the Owen County Senior Citizens Center, said.
She said the group will wait until they find out how much money they will receive before deciding where they will go this year.
The team of Jim Hamilton, Rick Bowman, Gary Hamilton and Carl Giles won the tournament. Reggie Taylor, Darrell Morgan, Chris Kluemper and Jimmy Hays finished second. Jared Perkins, Scott Howard, Timmy Perkins and Daniel Neeley finished third; while B.J. Watts, Chuck Watts, Tony Watts and Jim Chism placed fourth.
