Owen countians no stranger to harsh winters

Long before modern instruments were available to make weather predictions, animals and farmers observed their surroundings in order to prepare for a hard winter.
Squirrels rushing about to store an abundance of acorns was an early sign of a hard winter. The small woolly worms also gave clues about what to expect in the upcoming winter season.
If the orange band encircling the middle of the worm was narrow, most certainly heavy snow was on the way, and if the woolies were bigger and fatter than usual, bitter cold was in the forecast.
