When the brackets for the 2015 Eighth Region All ‘A’ Classic come out, there is one team the Owen County High School girls basketball team will not want to see on their half of the draw - the Walton-Verona High School Lady Bearcats.
On Jan. 14, the two teams met for the fifth-straight year in the tournament. They squared off in the quarterfinals at Carroll County.
After holding a slim 5-2 lead after the first quarter, the Lady Bearcats took control in the second quarter and raced out to a 25-10 lead at halftime.
They would continue to push the advantage in the second half and would win the game 59-29.
It was the fourth time in five years Walton-Verona has eliminated Owen County from the All ‘A’ Classic. The Lady Rebels defeated the Lady Bearcats in the quarterfinals last year.
Senior A.J. Gravely led Owen County with 12 points. Freshman Morgan Ellis had 6 points while eighth-grader Macie Osborne finished with 7 points. Eighth-graders, Debbie Farrar and Kendrah Ashby each had 2 points.
Walton-Verona would go on to defeat Gallatin County in the semifinals while Trimble County High School knocked off Williamstown to reach the finals.
In the championship game, it would be Trimble County claiming their fourth All ‘A’ title as they defeated Walton-Verona 59-47. It was their first time cutting down the nets since 2008.
Owen County will be in action tonight (Wednesday) as they travel to take on Collins. They will remain in the road on Thursday night at Franklin County before returning home to play Beechwood on Monday night.
