Donations, volunteers aid historical society

-A A +A

Editor:
I would like to apologize to all veterans, with their families, who did not have a banner of honor at the courthouse on Sweet Owen Day.  ALL who serve and served are deserving of this kind of recognition.  Unfortunately, there are costs associated with the making and the hanging of those banners. The Owen County Historical Society cannot purchase a banner for every veteran.
However, we (the Owen County Historical Society) can honor all of our veterans by having their pictures and military information saved in our museum’s research files, as well as physically displayed in a picture frame. Unfortunately, the military room at the museum is full and one must climb stairs to see our display.
It is our hope to soon begin a project that will provide access to our veterans, both physical and digital. It will take us quite a while to complete this project, for it involves inventorying, scanning, printing, framing, and filing. Please continue to bring your military information and pictures.
The Owen County Historical Society operates the museum by its members who volunteer. Our membership has declined, plus a majority of our members are senior citizens who are not able to do some of the work as they have in the past. About half of our members are out of town, or out of state.  We are thankful to have all that we do have, but it is the very generous donors and the few volunteers that keep the museum going. Our yearly membership dues ($25 per person) do not pay the minimum operating costs. Well, maybe it would if we had a lot more members.
If you are not interested in membership, please donate. The Owen County Historical Society is a 501(c)(3) organization. A building fund has been established for an expansion to our museum to provide the space needed to properly store and present the information and the artifacts that have been entrusted to our care. Contact the Historical Society by phone at 484-2529; by mail at 206 N Main Street, Owenton, KY  40359; or by email at owencohistory@yahoo.com.
