The 38th Miss Owen County Fair was crowned during the opening night of the Owen County 4-H Fair and Horse Show Monday. Danielle Hoop, the 19-year-old daughter of Gary and Patricia Hoop, will now have the chance to compete in the Miss Kentucky County Fair Pageant in January. Hoop said she began competing in pageants when she was about 14, but never placed during that time. “A few years ago, I was convinced to start competing again,” Hoop said. “I guess you could say I started getting a little more serious about it at that point.” With the pageant full of surprises, Hoop said she didn’t know how this year’s competition would turn out. “It’s awesome because I had done it two years in the past and you never know what to expect,” Hoop said. “It was just an amazing moment and I couldn’t be more happy.” Other winners in the pageant included first runner-up Kayla Maddox; second runner-up Stephanie Sons; third runner-up Tyera Lancaster; fourth runner-up Christina Johnson; and Miss Congeniality, Molly Borchers. “Getting to be with all the girls is the best part about it,” Hoop said. “Even though most people never see it, we have a lot of fun.” A 2011 graduate of Owen County High School, Hoop attends the University of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg, where she is majoring in biology. “The pageants help with real-life things,” Hoop said. “The interviews that we’ll face in our careers, gaining the confidence to get us through life, not being nervous in big crowds, and numerous other things.” If there’s one thing she’s looking forward to during her reign as Miss Owen County Fair, Hoop said it would be helping her peers. “I want to be the best role model I can be for any other young women here in Owen County.” Pageants will resume tonight with the Miss Pre-Teen pageant beginning at 7 p.m. and the Miss Teen pageant at 8 p.m. Mother of the Year and Owen Countian of the Year will be awarded between the two pageants. The Little Prince and Princess pageant and Little Miss and Mister Owen County will take place Thursday and the baby contest Friday.
