Ann Dawson Gaines, 82, of Madison, Ind., passed away Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2012, at the Thornton Terrace Health Campus in Hanover, Ind.
Ann entered this life on Dec. 12, 1929, in Owenton. She was the loving daughter of the late Marvin and Frances Hancock Dawson. She was raised in Owen County and graduated in 1948 from Owenton High School.
On June 4, 1948, Ann was united in marriage in Owenton to Carl Gaines. This happy union was blessed with one daughter, Debra and two sons, Mark and Carl Michael. Ann and Carl moved to Madison in January 1954. Ann began employment with the Indiana Kentucky Electric Corporation, working in the personnel department for 10 years. She later was a self-employed tax accountant for 17 years. The couple also purchased a farm and enjoyed their years farming. Ann and Carl owned and operated Gaines Shoe Store in Madison, retiring in 1990. Ann was a faithful member of the Hanover Baptist Church in Hanover, serving as organist for 15 years, church clerk for 10 years and treasurer for 20 years. Ann enjoyed quilting, sewing, playing the organ and being with her family. She was a devoted wife, loving mother and caring grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Marvin and Frances Hancock Dawson; her husband, Carl Gaines; and one son, Carl Michael Gaines.
She is survived by her daughter, Debra Horine (David) of Hanover, Ind.; her son, Mark Gaines (Patty) of Madison, Ind.; her grandsons, Brent Shewmaker (Amy), Brian Shewmaker (Kim), Jodie Giltner and Cory Madison (Brittany); her granddaughters, Meghan Horine Schafer (Kevin) and Laura Tingle; her great-grandchildren, Madison Shewmaker, Zane Shewmaker, Blake Shewmaker, Kole Shewmaker and Landon Madison; her sister, June Wood of Paris; her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Rosemary Gaines of Owenton, Don Gaines (Sue) of Owenton and Bobby Gaines of Owenton; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
A funeral service was held Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2012, at Hanover Baptist Church in Hanover, Ind. with the Rev. J.D. Traylor, the Rev. James Sparks and Bro. George Severn officiating. She was interred at the Marble Valley Cemetery in Madison, Ind.
The funeral home in charge of arrangements was Morgan and Nay Funeral Centre.
