  • Lady Rebel runners receive...

The Owen County cross country team enjoyed a great deal of success in 2008.

The middle school team captured the NCKC Team Title with Julie Spaulding claiming the individual title.

Danielle Hoop had another solid season as she captured the NCKC title and finished second in both the regional and state meets.

In light of their achievements, Hoop and Spaulding received postseason accolades.

  • Rebels grab big district victory

There is no place like home.

That is what the Owen County Rebels are saying following two weeks of games away from Owen County. The Rebels’ world tour began Dec. 18 with a game at Henry County. They then hit the road for Bourbon County to play in the Kentucky Bank Shootout before traveling to Lloyd for a pre-Christmas game with the Juggernauts. It was then three days in Campbellsville for the Coca-Cola/Campbellsville University Shootout.

After returning home for a couple of days of practice, the Rebels got on one more bus for a trip to Carrollton Saturday night.

  • Lady Rebels reach tourney finals

For the second year in a row, the Owen County Lady Rebels reached the finals of a holiday basketball tournament.

Last year, the team reached the championship game of the Gallatin Steel Invitational where they defeated Meade County. This year, the Lady Rebels made it to the finals of the North American Stainless Classic where they took on Carroll County.

Along the way to the championship game, the Lady Rebels defeated North Bullitt (41-32) on Dec. 20 in the first round; and on Dec. 22, they took on the Lady Bears of Spencer County in round two.

  • District title victory named top...

There were many big moments in sports throughout 2008. The New York Giants were the improbable winners of the Super Bowl over the previously unbeaten New England Patriots. Tiger Woods won the U.S. Open on one leg. Michael Phelps won eight Gold Medals at the Olympics in Beijing. The Tampa Bays Rays made it to the World Series before falling to the Philadelphia Phillies. It was a good year.

Owen County also had its share of sports memories over the past year. I have chosen five memorable moments of 2008.

  • Rebels' comeback falls short

The hole was too deep and one the Rebels could not climb out of.

On Dec. 22, Owen County headed to Erlanger to take on the Lloyd Juggernauts. The teams met a season ago with Owen County coming away with the 65-53 win in Owenton. The Rebels also played in the Lloyd Memorial Invitational last December.

This year, the result was different.

  • Owen County girls soccer team...

The Lady Rebels’ soccer team handed out its team awards for the 2008 season.

Owen County Girls Soccer Head Coach Mike Haines said  he would have liked to have seen more wins but thought the season was a success.

Haines said he did not lose a single minute of practice or playing time to academic eligibility issues.

  • Tough week for Rebels

It was not the kind of week the Owen County Rebels had in mind.

The week opened with the game at Gallatin County being snowed out followed by a pair of road games.

The Rebels traveled to Henry County Thursday and then headed to Bourbon County to take part in the Kentucky Bank Shootout. In both cases, the Rebels lost.

Thursday night’s game at New Castle came down to the final seconds. The Rebels had a one-point lead with 16 seconds to play but Henry County had one more possession.

  • Owen girls win opening game of...

The week included a game being snowed out, another one going down to the wire and another ending with a victory.

The Lady Rebels were scheduled to travel to Gallatin County early last week but the game was cancelled due to winter weather that came through the area.

Friday, Owen County bused to Henry County to take on the Lady Wildcats.

Henry County opened up the game by scoring the first five points.

  • Lady Rebels win district rematch

The last time Owen County and Carroll County met in Owenton the 31st District Championship was on the line.

That night, the Lady Rebels won the game 49-39 and cut down the nets.

Nine months later, the Lady Panthers came back to town looking to get even.

It looked for a while like the visitors were going to go home happy.

The Lady Panthers jumped out to a 19-10 at the end of the first quarter. They extended the lead to 24-10 before the Lady Rebels began the comeback.

  • Bowling Middle School Girls take...

The last time it happened was 2003. Some of the names on that team included Kelsey Wiliams and Kendall Cochran. On Dec. 6, the Bowling Middle School girls basketball team again captured the Eighth Grade Single “A” title.

This year’s squad won the tourney by defeating Gallatin County 48-34 in the championship game. It was the third time this season the Lady Rebels defeated the Lady Wildcats.

Bowling Middle School opened up the event with a bye in the first round before defeating Williamstown 40-24 in the second round.
