  • Relatives square off for...

    It is an annual occurrence for the Owen County softball team. It is a sign that spring and the upcoming season are near.

    The Lady Rebels hosted the Owen County Alumni Game March 19 in Owenton. The 2009 team took on the alumni in a game that displays talent from both the present and the past.

    The game was a family affair. Current Lady Rebel Jensen Wainscott played against her sister Tyne Wainscott and Kenzi Criswell played against her sister Katie Criswell Dunn.

    Another family that was well represented was the Hamilton family.

  • Rebels head to the diamond

    Last year in his first season as baseball coach at Owen County, Kevin Webster was not afraid to play anyone. The Rebels opened up the season by playing Harrison County who eventually won the 10th Region Championship. The Rebels also played the 8th Region Champion, Anderson County, as well as Scott County and DuPont Manual. This list also included a team from the 31st District in Henry County that made it to the 8th-region championship game.

    Despite winning only nine games last year, the Rebels will again face a tough schedule as they head into the upcoming season.

  • Lady Rebels stumble over...

    Owen County and Oldham County know how to play close games.

    The previous two contests were decided in the final seconds. The Lady Colonels won in 2008 by two points on the final shot of the game while the Lady Rebels squeaked out a three-point win earlier this year in the closing seconds.

    On March 3 in Crestwood, the two teams again squared off in a close encounter. On this night, both teams were looking to advance to the semifinals of the 8th Region Tournament.

  • Bearcats derail Rebels&rsquo...

    Heading into Monday night’s game with Anderson County the Owen County Rebels had already done something no other team since 1996 had done. They had won a first round game in the 8th Region Tournament. If Owen County could beat the region’s top team they would equal the feat of that ’96 team by reaching the 8th Region Finals.

    The Rebels almost did not reach Monday night. They had to overcome themselves and hang on in overtime to beat Grant County last Wednesday night in the first round.

  • Road to the Region - 8th Region...

    The girls’ 8th Region Tournament gets under way this week.

    The girls began play Monday and Tuesday at South Oldham High School. The semifinals will be Friday night and the championship game will be played Saturday at 7 p.m.

    The winner will advance to the KHSAA Girls’ Sweet Sixteen Championship to be played March 11-14 at E.A. Diddle Arena in Bowling Green.

    Simon Kenton is the defending 8th Region champ and appears to be the favorite to repeat this season.

  • Road to the Region - 8th Region...

    It is once again time for basketball fans to make their yearly pilgrimage to Henry County for the Boy’s 8th Region Tournament. The tournament has been held in their gym every year since 1963.

    This year’s version is sure to be exciting as it is hard to pick a clear-cut favorite to win. Most in the know would say Anderson County is the pick to advance to Rupp Arena and the KHSAA Boys Sweet Sixteen Championship to be held March 18-21.

  • Rebels take title

    Going into the final week of the regular season, the Rebels had two goals.

    The first was to get some momentum heading into the 31st District Tournament and the other was to finish with the best record in the North Central Kentucky Conference. After a resounding win Thursday night at Trimble County, the Rebels had done both.

  • Rebels continue to rack up...

    One is wrapping up a high-school career while the other is just beginning one. Both were named to the All Eight-Region Team.

    Owen County Senior Collin Gamble was named to the team for the second time while freshman Rianna Gayheart was named to her first. 

    Gamble was also selected to the team last season. The teams are selected by the coaches from throughout the region and the coaches are not allowed to vote for his or her own players.

  • Teams set to dive into districts

    Win or go home.

    That is what both the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams face this week as they enter the 31st District Tournament at Carroll County.

    The girls tipped things off Feb. 17. Owen County entered the tournament as the defending 31st District Champs as they played Gallatin County in the second game of the night. Carroll County and Henry County played the opening game.

  • Lady Rebels bid farewell to...

    Three seniors had one more chance to play on their home floor Feb. 16.

    Dani Hutchinson, Jerusha Toole and Morgan Green were recognized before the game against Spencer County and all three got to start against the Lady Bears.

    While the other four starters struggled to score early, senior Green took advantage of the opportunity. She made two of four shots including a 3-pointer in scoring five of the Lady Rebels’ seven first-quarter points. 

    From there it was a pair of juniors who did most of the damage.
