  • Teams set to dive into districts

    Win or go home.

    That is what both the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams face this week as they enter the 31st District Tournament at Carroll County.

    The girls tipped things off Feb. 17. Owen County entered the tournament as the defending 31st District Champs as they played Gallatin County in the second game of the night. Carroll County and Henry County played the opening game.

  • Lady Rebels bid farewell to...

    Three seniors had one more chance to play on their home floor Feb. 16.

    Dani Hutchinson, Jerusha Toole and Morgan Green were recognized before the game against Spencer County and all three got to start against the Lady Bears.

    While the other four starters struggled to score early, senior Green took advantage of the opportunity. She made two of four shots including a 3-pointer in scoring five of the Lady Rebels’ seven first-quarter points. 

    From there it was a pair of juniors who did most of the damage.

  • Owen JV girls shine at district...

    The JV Lady Rebels, on Saturday accomplished what the freshman team did the week before - they won the 31st District Tournament at Gallatin County.

    The Lady Rebels opened the day with a 24-20 win over Henry County in the first round. Mariah Fitzgerald led the team with 12 points and eight rebounds. Eighth-grader Hannah Neeley scored seven points.

    In the championship game, Owen County captured the title by defeating Gallatin County 38-19. Fitzgerald again led way by scoring 15 points and pulling down 10 boards. Emilie Davis added 13 points.

  • One-girl show

    She is one a kind.

    Owen County High School senior Evyn White is the lone member of the school’s swimming team. She recently wrapped up her season and career at the Region 4 meet Feb. 6-7 at Scott County High School. White swam in the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard breaststroke.

    She posted one of the top 12 times in the preliminaries to reach the finals in both events. In the finals, the senior finished ninth in the 50-yard freestyle and 10th in the 100-yard breaststroke.

  • A senior moment

    The Owen County Rebels have played its fair share of close games this season. Last week would prove to be no exception.

    The Walton-Verona Bearcats paid a visit to Owenton Feb. 9. After eight minutes, it looked like the Rebels might have an easy time of it. The home used a barrage of 3-pointers in the first quarter to jump out to a 25-13 lead. The Bearcats, however, would rebound and cut the lead to 35-28 at halftime.

  • Lady Rebels grab three Ws

    No one can blame the members of the Lady Rebels basketball team if they are a little tired. The team played four games in five days.

    The week opened with road games at Frankfort and Gallatin County.

    Rianna Gayheart poured in 30 points and grabbed 13 rebounds Feb. 9 against the Lady Panthers as the Lady Rebels rolled to a 47-39 win. Owen County held a 33-23 lead at halftime and held on to get the win despite scoring only one point in the third quarter.

  • Owen County freshman squads play...

    For the freshman girls to win the 31st District Freshman Tournament, they had to beat the Lady Wildcats, twice.

    Owen County Freshman Girls Coach Terry Spaulding and the Lady Rebels opened with a game against the host Gallatin County Lady Wildcats. Owen County had very little trouble dispatching the home team, winning 53-29 to advance to the championship game. Courtney Waldrop had 19 points while Devin Jouett added 13. Hannah Neeley had eight points and Katelyn Sutherland tossed in seven. Lynsey Farrar had four points. Meredith Marston had two.

  • Lady Rebels return from layoff...

    “This is just like last year,” Jensen Wainscott said as she entered the huddle during the final timeout of Friday night’s game with Oldham County.

    Wainscott was referring to Jan. 15, 2008, when her 3-pointer had given the Lady Rebels a 1-point lead over the Lady Colonels before the visitors went the length of the floor in the final seconds and scored to defeat Owen County 51-50.

    Following Rianna Gayheart’s 3-pointer, the Lady Rebels and their coach knew the best Oldham County could do would be to tie the game and send it to overtime.

  • Rebels drop two of three

    Owen County knew going into the week that it was not going to be easy.

    The Rebels were set to face off against Gallatin County, Williamstown and Grant County. They had defeated all three earlier in the season and all three had been decided in the final few minutes. Last week was to be much of the same.

    On Feb. 2, the Rebels headed to Warsaw to face Gallatin County. Owen County trailed 18-15 at the end of the first quarter. The Rebels rallied in the second quarter to outscore the Wildcats 16-8 and took a lead into halftime.

  • Pool party pals

    To say John Brumback likes billiards would be an understatement.

    He began playing the game when he was 11 years old. He began to get serious about it around the age of 15. He spent the last two years practicing 10 to 12 hours a day.

    Saturday, all of his hard work and dedication paid off.

    Brumback walked away with the All-Around Title from the Derby City Classic. The tournament took place at the Horseshoe Casino near New Albany, Ind. It began Jan. 23 and ended Saturday night.
