  • Lady Rebels Rebound

    The Owen County Lady Rebels opened the 2009 season March 23 as the team hosted Western Hills.

    The Lady Wolverines used a pair of pitchers to hold Owen County to just one hit in a 5-0 defeat.

    Lauren Lowe’s single in the bottom of the seventh was Owen County’s only hit of the game.

    Western Hills got single runs in the second and fourth and then added three more in the sixth to break the game open.

    The Lady Rebels hit the road March 24 as they headed to Warsaw to take on district foe Gallatin County.

  • Strong showing

    The 2009 O.J. Helvey Kentucky State Judo Championship was held Saturday at Greenwood High School in Bowling Green.

    After two years at the top, Owen County slipped to second in the state championship with 43 points. However, numerous players still came home with individual honors.

    Bowling Green Judo Club took first place with 68 points.

    Wakaishu Judo Club, based at Iroquois High School in Louisville, placed third with 40 points.

  • Owen County suffers pair of...

    Going into their March 23 home opener against Harrison County, the Owen County Rebels knew it was not going to be easy.

    The Thorobreds came to Owenton ranked eighth in the state.

    The Rebels soon found out why. Harrison County defeated Owen County 18-0 in five innings.

    Owen County High School Baseball Coach Kevin Webster summed up the game, “Harrison County is just one darn good team.”

    The Rebels returned to action March 24 as they welcomed Western Hills to Dunavent Field.

  • Owen track team runs at Grant Co.

    The Owen County track team was in action at Grant County on Thursday. The Rebels took part in the Grant County All-Comers Meet.

    The team had some strong performances from both the boys and the girls.

    In the 100-meter dash, Melina Bress finished fourth while Evyn White took 12th place.

    White then placed seventh in the 200-meter dash while Bress finished eighth.

  • Young Lady Rebels hope to make...

    At first glance, the Owen County softball team appears to be young, but don’t mistake youth for inexperience. The Lady Rebels return all their starters from a team that did not lose a single player to graduation.

    The young players spent last season gaining valuable experience and are ready to improve on an 11-14 record in 2008.

    Owen County will throw the first pitch of 2009 Monday as they welcome Western Hills to Owenton.

  • Opening Day 2009

    Monday was Opening Day in Owenton. The Owen County Rebels opened up the season with Harrison County Monday. They also took on Western Hills Tuesday.

    Before the first pitch of the regular season, the Rebels played a final tune-up against Shelby County March 18. The Rockets are ranked No. 1 in the eighth region heading into the season.

    Owen County High School Baseball Coach Kevin Webster said he was looking to gain some respect.

  • Relatives square off for...

    It is an annual occurrence for the Owen County softball team. It is a sign that spring and the upcoming season are near.

    The Lady Rebels hosted the Owen County Alumni Game March 19 in Owenton. The 2009 team took on the alumni in a game that displays talent from both the present and the past.

    The game was a family affair. Current Lady Rebel Jensen Wainscott played against her sister Tyne Wainscott and Kenzi Criswell played against her sister Katie Criswell Dunn.

    Another family that was well represented was the Hamilton family.

  • Rebels head to the diamond

    Last year in his first season as baseball coach at Owen County, Kevin Webster was not afraid to play anyone. The Rebels opened up the season by playing Harrison County who eventually won the 10th Region Championship. The Rebels also played the 8th Region Champion, Anderson County, as well as Scott County and DuPont Manual. This list also included a team from the 31st District in Henry County that made it to the 8th-region championship game.

    Despite winning only nine games last year, the Rebels will again face a tough schedule as they head into the upcoming season.

  • Lady Rebels stumble over...

    Owen County and Oldham County know how to play close games.

    The previous two contests were decided in the final seconds. The Lady Colonels won in 2008 by two points on the final shot of the game while the Lady Rebels squeaked out a three-point win earlier this year in the closing seconds.

    On March 3 in Crestwood, the two teams again squared off in a close encounter. On this night, both teams were looking to advance to the semifinals of the 8th Region Tournament.

  • Bearcats derail Rebels&rsquo...

    Heading into Monday night’s game with Anderson County the Owen County Rebels had already done something no other team since 1996 had done. They had won a first round game in the 8th Region Tournament. If Owen County could beat the region’s top team they would equal the feat of that ’96 team by reaching the 8th Region Finals.

    The Rebels almost did not reach Monday night. They had to overcome themselves and hang on in overtime to beat Grant County last Wednesday night in the first round.
