  • Owen County track team runs in...

     The Owen County track teams took part in a pair of meets last week.

    The first was at Walton before heading to Danville Friday for the All “A” Classic.

    At the Walton-Verona Tri Meet, the Rebels competed against both Grant County and Walton.

  • Softball team finds silver lining

    A stormy week that began with a severe thunderstorm ended with sunshine and a win for the Owen County Lady Rebels.

    Last week began with the team traveling to New Castle for a game with Henry County. Instead of playing softball, the two teams rode out a storm that included a funnel cloud that passed near the school. No damage was done and the team was able to return home safely.

    The next day, the team  saw another rainout as the game with Carroll County was postponed.

  • Owen football players raising...

    The game of football is largely an American sport. One would not think about playing the game in Australia. But for two Owen County High School students, that is exactly what they are going to get the chance to do.

    Keith Arutoff and Tyler Williams both are going to Australia to represent Kentucky in the Down Under Bowl. The game is the largest American Football Championship Tournament held outside the United States. The games have been played since 1989.

  • Back after break

    It sure did not feel like spring for much of last week. It was, however, spring break in Owen County and with the break came some rest from playing games for much of the week.

    The softball team was off all last week and was not scheduled to return to action until Monday when they traveled to Henry County.

    The girls also were scheduled to host Carroll County last night before hosting Gallatin County Wednesday night in a make-up game from an earlier rainout.

  • Owen County track teams continue...

    Spring break ended Saturday for the Owen County track team. The boys and girls were back in action at the Walton-Verona Bearcat Open.

    In the girls’ 100-meter dash, Melina Bress raced to a 10th-place finish while Evyn White finished 14th.

    The same two ran well in the 200-meter dash with White finishing 11th and Bress 15th.

    In the 400-meter dash it was Danielle Hoop who finished fifth. Rachel Dauwe placed 23rd.

    Hoop also ran well in the 800-meter run as she finished fifth and then placed second in the 1600-meter run.

  • Shamble success

    Satterwhite Shamble celebrated its 10th anniversary – “A Tradition Unlike Any Other.”

    If you watch the Masters, you’ll hear that catch phrase many times. There is a golf tournament  in Owen County that is also a unique tradition. The Charlie Satterwhite Golf Shamble celebrated its 10th anniversary Saturday at Fairway Golf Course in Wheatley. The event benefits the Charlie Satterwhite Fund and Trust for Life, which promote organ donation. Part of the proceeds from the event supports the Owen County Senior Citizens Center.

  • Rebels on a roll

    After a rough start to the 2009 campaign, Owen County High School Baseball Coach Kevin Webster has to feel better about his team.

    The Rebels headed into spring break riding a three-game winning streak. 

    Owen County began last week by traveling to Williamstown.

    The Demons scored single runs in the third and fifth and maintained the 2-0 advantage heading into the seventh inning.

    The Rebels rallied. Collin Gamble led off the inning with a single and was sacrificed to second by Denny O’Toole.

  • Softball team may be happy for...

    Spring break could not have come soon enough for the Owen County Lady Rebels.

    The Lady Rebels entered last week riding a two-game winning streak. That streak turned into a losing streak as the team dropped four straight games.

    Owen County opened up the week with a home game against district rival Henry County. The Lady Wildcats shut down the Lady Rebels offensively and were able to come up with enough big hits to win 7-0.

  • Boys’ track team...

    After a pair of track meets last week, it is clear the Owen County boys’ track team is ahead of the field.

    The boys spent last week at Shelby County and Western Hills where they had strong performances in the field events.

    In the discus competition, Josh Alford took second place at both Shelby County and Western Hills while Keith Arutoff finished third.

    At Western Hills, it was Daniel Cummins who finished third while Alford came home with 11th place. Alford also shined in the shot put. He finished third at both Shelby County and Western Hills.

  • Performances on track for girls

    When looking at the results from the Owen County girls’ track team, one thing is apparent. Those girls can run and run fast.

    The team took part in a pair of meets last week. One took place at Shelby County March 24 and the other at Western Hills Thursday. In both competitions, the girls performed well.

    In the 100-meter dash, Melina Bress and Evyn White both finished in the top twice last week.

    Bress ran to a second-place finish at Shelby County and a sixth-place finish at Western Hills. White finished seventh at Shelby County and at Western Hills.
