  • Stars come out for Sparta race

    The stars were out in Sparta Saturday before the sun went down.

    The Nationwide Series race at Kentucky Speedway always brings out some of the best drivers racing has to offer.

    Carl Edwards, Kyle Busch and Joey Logano are some of the best and most well-known drivers on the circuit and seem to enjoy coming to Kentucky.

    While fans enjoy rubbing shoulders with the drivers around the garage and the pits, one never knows who else they may bump into. Saturday night was no exception.

  • Junior Olympic skills...

    Local youngsters between the ages of 8 and 13 have the opportunity to participate in the Jr. Olympic Skills Competition. This free grassroots youth participation program allows boys and girls, competing separately, the opportunity to showcase their athletic abilities,  while promoting sportsmanship.

    The basketball portionwill be hosted by Owen County Parks & Recreation on June 17 at the OCES gym beginning at 6 p.m. Participants may register the day of the event.

  • Time to start your engines

    The NASCAR Nationwide Series returns to Kentucky Speedway this weekend with the ninth running of the “Meijer 300 Presented by Ritz.” A full house is expected to be on hand Saturday night when the green flag drops at 8:30. p.m. Last year, a crowd of over 73,000 attended the race.

    The weekend will get started Friday night at 5 p.m. when the drivers take to the track for practice. The session will last until 8 p.m.

    Saturday, gates will open at 2 p.m. Qualifying will begin at 5 p.m. Fans who get to the track early can enjoy a prerace concert by Pat Green.

  • Rebel signs with Cambellsville...

    Owen County High School football standout Chris Rivera, seated, second from left, signs a letter of intent to play football for Campbellsville University after receiving a scholarship. Rivera is surrounded by his father Joel, mother Kim, sister Tori, coach Andy Halloran, head coach Adam Fowler and Owen County High School Athletic Director Randy Bishop. Fowler asked all members of the football team to attend the formal signing ceremony to “show what can be achieved” by players who dedicate themselves to improvement.

  • Rebels’ season ends in...

    For just about anyone who plays games, some losses are harder to take than others.

    The Rebels’ loss in the opening round of the 31st District Tournament to Gallatin County May 18 would fall into the hard-to-take category.

    Owen County took a 2-1 lead into the seventh inning and were one out away from a win and a trip to the 31st District Championship game.

  • Lady Rebels reach district...

    On May 18, the Owen County softball team played in the 8th Region Tournament for the fourth consecutive year. The Lady Rebels advanced to the tournament by once again reaching the finals of the 31st District Tournament.

    The team played Carroll County in the first round at Henry County. The Lady Rebels got great pitching, solid defense and timely hitting in their 2-1 win over the Lady Panthers.

  • Owen track season wraps up in...

    Owen County High School Track and Field Coach Jerry Doolin talked all season about what a good group of kids he had on the track team. He spoke about their hard work and dedication and on Saturday in Louisville both of those qualities paid off.

    Several members of the Owen County track team headed to Louisville over the weekend to take part in the Kentucky State Track Meet.

    The highest finish was turned in by Keith Arutoff, who finished third in the discus. His best throw of 136 feet 3 inches was good enough for a school record.

  • Owen basketball players named to...

    The Owen County basketball teams had success on the court this past season. Both won the district championships in the same season for the first time in school history. While players were performing well on the court, many were also doing well in the classroom.

    Five member of the boys’ team and eight Lady Rebels were named to the All-Academic First Team. In order to be selected, members must have a GPA of 3.75 or higher.

  • Track team gets ready for state

    The Owen County track teams took part in the Region 5A Track Meet Saturday. The meet was held at Admiral Stadium in Danville. Both teams performed well and both will be sending members to the Class A State Meet next Saturday in Louisville.

    As a team, the girls finished fourth overall. Danielle Hoop qualified for next week in both the 400-meter dash and the 800-meter run. Hoop won the 400-meter dash while Rachel Dauwe finished 10th. Hoop, a sophomore, also won the 800-meter run.

  • Rebels wrap up their season

    The regular season has come to a close for the Owen County baseball team.

    The team played two road games last week.

    The Rebels traveled to take on Frankfort where Owen County banged out 16 hits on their way to a 14-1 win. Matt Harris, Collin Gamble, Jordan Cox, Zach McDonald and Denny O’Toole combined for 11 hits and 13 runs batted in. Brody Layton pitched four scoreless innings to pick up the win.
