  • Hornaday credits crew for...

    Two drivers came into Saturday night at Kentucky Speedway looking to extend winning streaks. Both were successful.

    Ron Hornaday Jr. held off Mike Skinner on the final lap to claim the checkered flag in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race. For Hornaday, it was his third-consecutive win. With the win, he became the first repeat winner of the race at the track.

    The second race of the night saw Parker Kligerman finish first in the ARCA RE/MAX Series. For the 18-year-old rookie, it was his fourth straight victory and his fifth of the season.

  • Owen County teams prepare for...

    While most are enjoying summer, players and coaches at Owen County High School are starting to practice for the fall.

    Fall sports teams are allowed to begin practice today in preparation for the upcoming seasons.

    Football, volleyball, soccer, cross country and golf will begin practice over the next few days as they looking forward to their first games or matches in August.

    The football team will open the season Aug. 29 at Grant County.

  • NASCAR Camping World Truck...

    Kentucky Speedway is gearing up for another busy weekend of racing. The track will host the “Built Ford Tough 225 Presented by the Greater Cincinnati Ford Dealers” and the “Click it or Ticket. Buckle Up! Kentucky 150” Saturday night in Sparta.

    The first race is part of the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series while the second is part of the ARCA RE/MAX Series. Both series have been racing at the Speedway since 2000.

  • Martial arts star

    Owen County resident Kendall Yount, 11, recently competed in the ATA TaeKwonDo World Championships held in Little Rock, Ark.She took a silver medal in sparring for her age division.

    Yount will be entering the sixth grade at The Frankfort Christian Academy. She trains at Moberly’s Black Belt Academy in Frankfort under instructor Katrina Nimmo.

  • Owen County High School track...

    The 2009 Owen County High School track team banquet was held June 19. The following awards were given:

    • Girls most  points and academic award - Danielle Hoop

    • Boys most points and most improved award – Keith Arutoff

    • Tied for most points – Josh Alford.

    • Academic and rookie of the year award for his events  – Clayton Cook

    • Academic award – Jared Fitzgerald

    • Coaches award and 110 percent award – Tyler Williams

  • Shooting stars

    George Gayle from Pleasant Home won second place in the “E” class of the main event held at Elk Creek Hunt Club last week.

    The main event consisted of 200 clay-bird targets.

    Gayle had a strong performance Friday, leading his class at the end of the day.

    Saturday,  he was just one bird out of first place; and Sunday, he was six birds from the lead to take the second-place trophy.

  • Owen County teams bring home...

    Owen County Parks and Recreation sent four teams to the North Central Kentucky Baseball Alliance League Tournament Saturday. The four teams competed in three separate divisions. The Owen County Mudcats and Owen County Sidewinders played in the Cal Ripken 10-and-under division. The Owen County Rebels played in the Cal Ripken 12-and-under division while a second team called the Owen County Rebels played in the Babe Ruth Division for kids between 13 and 15.

    The teams competed against other teams from Carroll, Gallatin, Trimble and Grant counties.

  • Owen softball players win post-...

    The Owen County softball team recently handed out its awards for the 2009 season.  

    Jensen Wainscott and Courtney Waldrop finished the season with the highest batting averages. Both hit .338 on the year.

    Katelyn Sutherland was the Pitching Ace as she finished the season with an earned run average of 2.02.

    The Most Improved Player was Brittany Tuggle.

    Wainscott led the team in stolen bases with 22 while Courtney Waldrop was the RBI leader with 18 runs batted in for the season.

  • Bruton Smith looks to future of...

    Everyone knows what Bruton Smith wants. Those same people know he will eventually get it. The only question left to answer is when.

    Smith, the chairman and chief executive officer of Speedway Motorsports Inc., addressed the media before Saturday’s race and spoke about the future for the track.

    He said the likelihood of the track getting a Sprint Cup race is not good for next year, but the chances for 2011 look better.

    In order to get ready, Smith said the track is looking to expand by as many as 50,000 seats.

  • Logano prevails ... again

    While many 19 year olds probably don’t think too much about history, Joey Logano was making history of his own Saturday night in Sparta.

    A crowd of 70,000 turned out Saturday to take in the “Meijer 300 Presented by Ritz” and were not disappointed.

    Joey Logano passed Kyle Busch with nine laps to go and went on to pick up his second-straight win at the track. With the win, the 19-year-old became the first driver to repeat as the winner of the Nationwide Series race.

    Logano may want to hold every race at the Kentucky Speedway.
