  • Middle school football season...

    There will be a lot of new faces around the Bowling Middle School football team this season.

    After last year’s team finished the season with a perfect 8-0 regular season and a loss to Grant County in the opening round of the playoffs ,head coach Jeff Jump decided to step down.

    His replacement is not a stranger to the program. Tommy Tackett took over as head coach.

    The Owen County Youth Mighty Pro and Power House football teams traveled to Cincinnati to participate in the annual Death Valley Bowl.

  • Boys golf team finishes second...

    The Owen County boys golf team is off to a good start in the 2009 season.

    The Rebels hosted the NCKC Tournament Saturday at Fairway Golf Course. Owen County finished second behind Walton-Verona. The team was led by Jarrod Ball, who shot a 79. The score was good enough for a second-place finish among individual golfers. Zach Ripy had the eighth-best round of the day as he shot an 83.

    Colton New posted an 89 while Brody Layton shot a 99. Jon Locker shot a 107 for the Rebels.

  • Victory

    The monkey is off their back.

    On Aug. 11 at Owen County High School, history was made. The Lady Rebels’ volleyball team picked up its first ever varsity win.

    “It’s everything we’ve been working for,” said Owen County Head Volleyball Coach Amanda Borchers following the win.

    Going down in the annals will be the Eminence Lady Warriors, who were on the losing side of the match. Owen County won 25-18 and 25-12.

  • Future is now for Rebels soccer

    With just one senior and two juniors on the roster, Head Coach Jerry Doolin will get to see the future of the Owen County soccer team every time he looks out on the field this season.

    The season kicked off  Tuesday for the Rebels when they competed at the Capital City Classic in Frankfort. The tournament continues Thursday and Saturday at Sower Field.

    The only senior on the Rebels’ roster is goalie Justin Davis. Doolin said Davis is one of the best goalkeepers in the state. Davis will also kick for the football team.

  • Coach optimistic as girls soccer...

    The soccer season kicked off Monday for the Owen County Lady Rebels.

    As the season begins, Owen County Girls Head Coach Mike Haines has to replace four of his top six scorers from a season ago. Three players graduated and last year’s leading scorer, Devin Jouett who scored 12 goals, moved out of the county.

    The next leading scorer was Alexis Ellis, who is returning. The sophomore scored two goals last season as a freshman. Sophomore Katie Haines scored one goal last year.

  • Lady Rebels golf team hits the...

    The Owen County girl’s golf team is back on the course for the 2009 season.

    Coach David Wainscott returns a solid team of golfers that include sisters Krista and Shelby Power and Jensen Wainscott. Other returning members of the team include Lynsey Farrar, Aly Minch, Kennedi Dermon and Shelby Gambrell.

  • Kemper plays in all-star game

    A member of the Owen County Lady Rebels was recently honored by being named to Kentucky High School Coaches Association Junior All-Star Team.

    Eko Kemper was named to the team and played in the KSCA East/West Junior All-Star Game. The game was played at Bellarmine College July 18. The West team, made up of players from the Fifth and Sixth Regions, defeated the East team of players from the Seventh and Eighth Regions 71-51.

  • The journey starts on first day

    It’s back.

    Today is a day dreaded by some and looked forward to by others. That’s right. Today is the first day of school in Owen County.

    It is hard to believe, but school is in session. The buses hit the roads this morning to pick up the kids, the cafeteria fired up the ovens to prepare lunch and somewhere parents silently breathed a huge sigh of relief.

  • Looking for a victory

    In the game of football, it often takes three years before a wide receiver has a breakout season.

    The Owen County volleyball team is hoping the same holds true for them.

    Owen County High School Volleyball Coach Amanda Borchers and the rest of the team are entering year number three looking for win number one. If you ask some of those around the program, they will tell you that all of that is about to change.

    The Lady Rebels opened the season Monday night at home against Trimble County. But victory once again eluded Owen County as the Lady Rebels fell, 0-2.
