  • Despite delays, tournament...

The tournament that will not end will finally crown a champion tonight.
The Eighth Region All “A” Classic was to have been decided Saturday. Mother Nature had other ideas, however, as the area saw snow that accumulated enough to force the postponement of both the semifinals and the finals.
The semifinals were decided Tuesday when Owen County took on Gallatin County and Eminence squared off against Trimble County.
The winners will play tonight at 7 p.m. with the winner advancing to the All “A” State Tournament next week in Richmond.

  • Lucky No. 13

Saturday afternoons are usually a time for players to recover following a Friday night game.
That was not the case this past weekend when Owen County traveled to Lawrenceburg for a game with Anderson County.
The 1:30 p.m. tip-off featured a pair of eighth region foes who are hoping to be playing well into March.
The Lady Bearcats came into the contest ranked second in the region with 13 wins.
The Lady Rebels were looking for their 13th victory.

  • Rebels end drought during...

Before going on a long car trip, it is advisable to make sure the vehicle carrying your family is tuned up.
The Owen County High School Runnin’ Rebels are hoping this week of tune-ups will make for a pleasant drive down to Richmond.
The Rebels took on Anderson County at home Friday night.
The two teams have met three times in the last two years with the Bearcats coming out on top each time. Each game was similar. All three were close at the half with Anderson County pulling away over the final half.

  • ‘A’ big disappointment for Lady...

Timing is everything in life. You always get stopped by the train when you are running late or you always carry your umbrella until the day it actually rains.
The same is true in basketball. Just ask the Owen County Lady Rebels.
After rolling through their last five games, the Lady Rebels shot just 16 of 55 from the field in falling to Williamstown in the semifinals of the Eighth Region All ‘“A” Classic at Walton-Verona.

  • BMS finishes second in tournament

The Bowling Middle School seventh-grade boys’ basketball team took part in the 2010 Holiday Basketball Tournament. The event was in Lexington the weekend before Christmas. They finished as runner-up.
The tournament consisted of 12 teams. In pool play, the Rebels fell to North Pulaski and Garrard and defeated Campbell County.
They did, however, get hot in the tournament portion.
They were victorious over Lincoln County, East Jessamine and Richmond Model.
In the championship game they lost to North Pulaski.

  • Williams honored for gridiron...

Owen County High School junior Sawyer Williams may be busy on the hardwood these days, but he was recently honored for his efforts last fall on the gridiron.
Williams was named as an honorable mention to the Kentucky All-State High School Football Team.
For the season, Williams led the Rebels in tackles with 62 and fumble recoveries with three.
Owen County High School Head Football Coach Adam Fowler said Sawyer is nearly unblockable on the defensive line when he gets after the quarterback.

  • Rebels two timing

It was a week of streaks for the Owen County High School Boys Basketball team. Two streaks to be exact, and both involve the number two.
On Jan. 4, the Rebels defeated Gallatin County for the second time this season. The 54-50 victory marked the first time since 2005 Owen County has won two straight over their rivals from Warsaw.
“It’s the first time in a long time,” said Justin Shelton of the two-game winning streak.

  • Girls’ 8th Region All ‘A’...

    Where: Walton-Verona High School
When: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights
What is at stake: A trip to Richmond for the State All ‘A’ Classic Feb. 2-6

Last year in Warsaw it was Walton-Verona who cut down the nets as they defeated Carroll County, Owen County and Gallatin County on their way to the championship.
The Lady Bearcats’ win last year was their first trip to Richmond since 2000 when they won the tournament at Trimble County.

  • Lady Rebels grab top seed in...

The 31st District Tournament may be a month away but one thing is for certain. The Owen County High School Lady Rebels will be No. 1 going into the week.
The three-time champs wrapped up the No. 1 seed with a pair of wins last week over Gallatin County and Henry County. The Lady Rebels defeated Gallatin County, 67-51, Jan. 3 before knocking off the Lady Wildcats, 46-28, Friday night.
The last four wins have one thing in common. They have not been close.
