  • Owen track teams host Dayton and...

    The Owen County High School boys and girls track teams were in action Friday in Owenton. The teams hosted the Owen County All-Comers Meet that featured Dayton and Eminence. Both teams dominated the competition.
    In the girls 100-meter dash, it was Amber Gover crossing the line first with Ashley Byers finishing in third place.
    Kaileen Sizemore placed seventh; Sarah Willhoite, eighth; Hannah Strohmeier came in ninth; Autumn Gover finished 10th; and Sarayna Knox placed 12th.

    Wildcats, 3 vs. Clovers, 3

    The Wildcats defeated the  Clovers in the season opener. Striking first for the Wildcats was Avery Miller. Miller scored two goals in the third quarter, one goal off an assist from Alexandria Perry. Macie Chappell added a goal for the Wildcats during the fourth quarter. The entire Wildcat team played great.
    The Clovers had excellent defensive play by Savannah Boyce, Kallista Ogden and Nick Angle stopping many shot attempts by the Wildcats.

    Baseball
    • The Owen County High School baseball team continued its solid start to the 2012 season.
    The Rebels picked up two wins last week. The first came March 26 when Owen County doubled up on Trimble County with a 12-6 victory at home. They would follow that up the next day with a 9-2 loss at Walton-Verona.
    The team competed Saturday at the Jim Dougherty Memorial Tournament. The Rebels began the day with a convincing 15-2 win over Dayton before falling 4-1 to Highlands.

  • Owen girls run strong at Walton

    The Owen County High School girls track team spent its Saturday at Walton-Verona taking part in the Light the Night Meet.
    In the 100-meter dash, Emily Allen finished14th and Andi Burford came in 17th. Emily Bibb placed 19th in the 200-meter dash with Ashley Williams placing 22nd.
    Mikala Byers placed 27th in the 800 meter run. Nicole Jacobs and Paula Rivera finished 17th and 19th in the 100 meter hurdles. The two finished 16th and 17th in the 300 meter hurdles.

  • Boys finish fourth over weekend

    The Owen County High School boys track team is off to a good start. The team took part in the Light the Night Meet at Walton-Verona Saturday where they finished fourth.
    In the 100-meter dash, it was Paul Banks finishing second and Cory Cannon 20th.
    Bobby Mingie placed second in the 200-meter dash with Chris Smith in 17th place.
    Will Dempsey and Ben Allen finished 14th and 26th in the 400-meter dash while Cody Gray and Logan Bitler placed 19th and 22nd in the 800-meter run.

     • The Owen County baseball season got started last week with a road game at Shelby County. The Rockets defeated the Rebels 6-3. Owen County will be open up the home portion of the schedule Thursday when the welcome Frankfort to Dunavent Field. They will then get back on the bus Friday and Saturday as they head to play at Anderson County and Oldham County. The Rebels will return home for a game with Trimble County on Monday.

  • Rebels track starts fast,...

    The Owen County boy’s track team saw its season quickly get out of the blocks.
    The team competed last week at the Carroll County All-Comer’s Meet where they finished first as a team over seven other schools.
    The Rebels had five first-place finishes in the track events including Paul Banks. who won the 100-meter dash.
    Darian Polley finished first in the 110-meter hurdles with Avery Gover coming in third.
    Polley also captured the 300-meter hurdles with Bobby Mingie right behind him in second place.

  • March Madness again: Time to...

    It is once again time for the 2012 NCAA Basketball Tournament. That means it is time for me to show my lack of knowledge and make my picks.
    First let me say that I am not sure why I do this every year but I guess if Ron Paul can run for president three times without any realistic hope of winning, I can once again fill out my brackets knowing I am going to miss more than I get right.

  • Season winds down

    With the season winding down, the parents of the Owen County Parks  and Recreation Basketball League want to say thank you to the girls, coach Greg Estes and assistant coach David Smith for a great season.  
    In a statement, the parents said the league has been a positive experience for everyone involved.
    “We’ve seen wins and losses and either way we were always very proud of these girls.  We’ve seen them all in their own way grow and improve to put in their part that made up the team,” the parents said in a statement.

  • Lady Rebels track team begins...

    The Owen County Lady Rebels began the 2012 track season last week. The team participated in the Carroll County All-Comers meet in Carrollton.
    Some of the top finishes include Emily Allen, who placed fourth in the 100-meter dash and the 200-meter dash.
    Owen County’s Haley DeCandia and Michaela Gibson finished seventh and eighth in the 200-meter dash. Paula Rivera placed fifth in the 100-meter hurdles while Andi Burford placed ninth.
    Nicole Jacobs placed sixth in the 300-meter hurdles.
