  • Volleyball team wins again

    This is getting to be a habit, but not a bad one.

    The Owen County volleyball team picked up its fifth win of the season Thursday night. The Lady Rebels defeated Heritage Academy 25-12 and 25-13 to pick up the win.

    Lindsey Robertson played at the setter position and had 19 assists. Mollie Borchers had 15 kills, two blocks and four aces. Kayla Simpson added a pair of blocks, seven kills and three aces. Chelcey True had seven kills in the victory.

  • Home team takes title

    The boys had been waiting all season for this moment and Saturday, it finally happened.

    The Rebels hosted the Owen County Invitational Saturday. The team was still looking for its first win of the season. The Rebels had lost a tough match last week to Grant County. The Braves led 1-0 for most of the game before scoring two goals in the final 10 minutes to get the 3-0 win.

    Saturday’s tournament began with Gallatin County taking on Walton-Verona. The Wildcats advanced to the championship game with a 3-2 win over the Bearcats.

  • Rebels rack up No. 1

    On a night perfect for football, the Owen County Rebels took on the Gallatin County Wildcats.

    The Rebels were looking for their first win of the season and first over the Wildcats since 2006. Despite some sickness that had spread around the locker room during the week, Owen County picked up the 13-7 win.

    All the scoring came in the first quarter and the Rebels then held fort the rest of the night.

    The Wildcats scored on their first offensive possession to take a 7-0 lead.

  • Sports Briefs

    • The girls’ soccer team was in action twice last week. The Lady Rebels dropped a contest at Anderson County. They then returned home Thursday night to host Western Hills. The Lady Rebels had several chances to score in the first half but were not able to convert. Western Hills got on the board late in the first half and led 1-0 at the half. Western Hills added another goal before Alexis Ellis scored the lone Owen County goal to cut the lead to 2-1. Western Hills added another goal for the 3-1 win. The girls will be back in action tonight as they travel to Grant County.

  • Boys’ golf finishes...

    It was a second-place finish for the Owen County Boys’ Golf Team last week at the All “A” Classic.

    The second-place finish was another strong showing for the young team who earlier this season finished second at the NCKC Tournament at Fairway Golf Course.

    Jarrod Ball and Zach Ripy each shot 80 to make the All-Tournament Team.

    Both players missed making the state tournament by a single shot.

  • Rumble on the ridge

    For the Owen County Rebels and their fans, this one must have hurt.

    Owen County dug itself a hole for the first three-and-a-half quarters of Saturday night’s game with Grant County. The Rebels spent the final six minutes of the game digging out.

    Just as it appeared the game was headed to overtime, disaster struck.

    The Rebels were their own worst enemy in the first half. Turnovers and penalties stymied drives.

  • Owen County golf team has a...

    The Owen County girl’s golf team is an example of how experience and hard work pay off.

    The team won its first-ever eighth region All “A” Classic golf tournament Aug. 26 at Eagle Creek Golf Course. The win was the team’s second big win of the season. The Lady Rebels won the NCKC Tournament earlier this year.

    “I told the girls that all our matches and practices paid off with our NCKC and Class ‘A’ wins,” Owen County Girls’ Golf Coach David Wainscott said.

  • Soccer team gets win in unusual...

    The Owen County girls’ soccer team pulled off something unusual in its opening game of the Capital City Classic last week.

    The team picked up its first win of the season as they knocked off Western Hills 1-0 in a contest where they did not have a shot on goal for the entire game. The lone goal of the game came from Ashley Byers in a shootout.

    The Lady Rebels had a couple of scoring opportunities but could not convert. Defensively, Owen County put in a solid effort and Samantha Toole had 26 saves in goal to preserve the win.

  • Robert Beverly ranked No. 5 in...

    Over 600 competitors from as far away as Armenia, Puerto Rico, Ecuador, Australia, South Africa, Canada, Europe, Latin America, and South America gathered at the Broward County Convention Center in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Aug. 1-2 for the Junior U.S. Open Judo Championship.

  • Here come the Rebels

    The Owen County Rebels kick off the 2009 season on Saturday night. The team will travel to Grant County to take on the Braves at 8 p.m. as part of the Grant County Gridiron Kickoff Classic.

    Owen County and second-year head football coach Adam Fowler are looking to improve on 2008 when the Rebels won two games and lost in the first round of the playoffs to eventual state runner-up Newport Central Catholic.
