  • Rebels grab big road win

What started out as a promising week for Owen County ended in disappointment.
The Rebels began last week with a tough, hard-fought win at Gallatin County before closing out the week with a loss at Henry County Friday.
The team headed into the game at Gallatin County looking to erase a pair of losing streaks. The Wildcats were riding a three-game winning streak over the Rebels and Owen County had not won in Warsaw since December 2006.
Owen County ended both streaks with a 57-53 victory.

  • Kennedi Dermon breaks MBMS...

Owen County High School Head Girls Basketball Coach Bob Osborne shouldn’t have any trouble finding someone to put the ball in the basket for the next several years.

Osborne currently has Rianna Gayheart, who was Maurice Bowling Middle School’s all-time leading scorer.

He also has Hannah Neeley, who was the record-holder for most points scored in a single season.

The key word in both of those sentences is “was.”

Last year, as a seventh-grader, Kennedi Dermon broke Neeley’s record by scoring 292 points.

  • Lady Rebels rattle off two...

The first two games for the Lady Rebels turned into a pair of blowout wins. Owen County first took care of Grant County, 74-36, Nov. 29 before easily defeating Williamstown, 76-48,  Friday. Both games were played in Owenton.

Rianna Gayheart began her junior season by scoring 22 points, dishing out four assists and grabbing eight steals against Grant County. Also adding 22 points in the opener was sophomore Hannah Neeley.

If the Lady Rebels had any first-game jitters, there were no outward signs.

  • Williams earns Player of the...

Owen County High School’s Sawyer Williams was named North Central Kentucky Conference Player of the Week for the week ending Dec. 4. Sawyer averaged 15 points and 12 rebounds in two games last week while shooting 77 percent form the floor and blocking 12 shots.

  • Defense sparks Rebels

The old saying goes defense wins championships.

For the Owen County Rebels, defense has been the difference since dropping the opening game of the season to Western Hills.

The Wolverines scored 57 points in their 1-point overtime win over the Rebels on night one.

In their next three games, no opponent has managed to score more than 44 points, resulting in three victories for the Rebels.

Trimble County and Carroll County were the latest opponents to struggle offensively and fall to Owen County.

  • After dropping opener, Rebels...

It was not the sort of opening night the Rebels were hoping for. But they did bounce back.

Owen County opened the season Nov. 30 against Western Hills. The contest was tight throughout with neither team able to take command of the game. The Wolverines eventually won in overtime, 57-56.

The Rebels were playing somewhat shorthanded as Zach Ripy was battling an illness. The team, however, got a boost from an unexpected source. Junior Cooper Taylor played well, scoring 10 points. Ripy did play and scored seven points but it was obvious that he was not his usual self.

  • Lady Rebels shine against...

The U10 Lady Rebels competed in the Commonwealth Cup in Richmond Nov. 6-7.

Finishing the weekend with a 2-1-1 record, the Lady Rebels represented the OCYSL well and continue to develop into soccer stars.

    Nov. 6

Nelson County Ladybugs, 3  — Lady Rebels, 1

The excellent footwork of Maria Bolanos, who scored midway through the first half, coupled with excellent defense by fullback Hailee Gordon and goalie Autumn Bolen gave the Lady Rebels the lead at the half.

  • MBMS players and coach join east...

The Kentucky Middle School Football Association recently hosted the second annual East vs. West All Star Classic and Combine.

During the weekend event in Frankfort, young football talent from across the state was brought together to compete.

Owen County was well represented with Rebel standouts Dalton Mears, Derek Rudde and Michael Wash asked to take part in the event.

The trio received a lot of attention and accolades for their efforts this past season.

  • Hard work pays off for soccer...

The soccer season may be over but both the boy’s and girl’s team still had some unfinished business.
