  • Friday Night Football Preview

    Homecoming Opponent: East Jessamine Jaguars

    Place: Patterson Field

    Time: 7:30 p.m.

    • East Jessamine is coached by Mike Bowlin. The school is located in Nicholasville.

    • The Jaguars come into Friday night’s game after dropping an 8-0 decision to Western Hills at home. The win dropped them to 2-3 on the season.

    • East Jessamine entered last Friday’s game averaging 31 points a game before being shutout by Western Hills.

  • Sports briefs for Sept. 23

    High School volleyball

    • The Owen County High School volleyball team dropped its only match last week to Cooper. The team is scheduled to play at Williamstown tonight and in the Carroll County Invitational Saturday.

  • Rebels bust out in home opener

    It had been 341 days since Owen County’s last home football victory. That win came against Atherton and their head coach Chris Collins.

    Friday night, Collins brought his new team – Trimble County – to Patterson Field for a match-up with the Rebels.

    He again left disappointed as the Rebels used a 16-point second quarter to take control of the game and eventually won 30-14. The victory evened the Owen County record at 2-2.

    The Rebels came into the game looking to break a three-game losing streak to the Raiders.

  • Friday Night preview

    Opponent: Bourbon County Colonels

    Place: Paris

    Kickoff: 7:30 p.m.

    • The Colonels are coached by Johnny Poynter. He should be familiar with the Rebels. Poynter came to Bourbon County from Trimble County.

    • Bourbon County has been on the mountain top. The Colonels defeated Owensboro Catholic 39-28 to capture the 1997 2A State Championship. Bourbon competes in 4A.

  • Freshman volleyball and JV golf...

    It’s sometimes easy to forget about the freshman and junior varsity teams. They work just hard as the varsity but often don’t get the recognition. Two of those teams turned in very good weekends.

    The Owen County High School freshman volleyball team traveled to Southern High School over the weekend and came home with a new, shiny trophy. The girls defeated Southern, Bullitt Central and Iriquois high schools to win the title.

    Haley DeCandia, Lizzy Anderson and Olivia Karsner were named to the all-tournament team.

  • Owen County Youth Football...

    The Owen County Parks & Recreation youth competitive football teams recently completed games against Pendleton County and Grant County. The Mighty Pro and Power House teams both came away victorious against both rivals, while the Midget team suffered losses in both of their contests. The following is a recap of the action:

    Midget Division

    Pendleton Co. – 27

    Owen County – 0

    The Panthers jumped on the young Rebels from the opening play and never looked back to capture the victory.

  • Varsity boys, JV girls earn...

    It was a week of two extremes for the Owen County boy’s soccer team last week.

    The week began and ended with shutout losses to both Simon Kenton and Scott County. In between, the Rebels easily defeated Garrard County 7-1.

    The game was the first game for Owen County in the Cardinal Cup at Scott County. James Marston scored four goals for the victorious Rebels. Marston also had an assist. Blake Lewis added two goals and an assist while Ryan Marston scored a goal and added a pair of helpers. Ben Allen, Austin Collins and Patrick Brumback each had assists.

  • Wildcats run past Rebels

    If a team could have a do-over, the Owen County Rebels would pick the second quarter of Friday night’s game at Henry County.

    After a scoreless first quarter, the Wildcats erupted for 37 unanswered points to close out the first half.

    It appeared the Rebels might have gotten out of the first half still in the game. The Rebels were trailing 22-7 with less than two minutes left in the half.

    The Wildcats closed out the quarter and half by scoring two touchdowns on two offensive plays to extend the lead to 37-7 as the two teams headed to the locker room.

  • Friday Night Football Preview

    Opponent: Trimble County Raiders

    Place: Patterson Field, Owenton

    Game Time: 7:30 p.m.

    • Chris Collins is the new head coach at Trimble County. Collins came to the Raiders from Atherton High School. Last season, Collins brought his team to Owenton and went home with a loss as the Rebels won the game 20-6.

  • Owen cross county team off and...

    The cross country season has begun for the Owen County Lady Rebels.

    The team has high expectations entering the season. Danielle Hoop is returning for her junior season. Julie Spaulding, a freshman, is returning for another year running for the varsity team.

    The two have been working hard this summer to prepare for this season. Spaulding continues to learn from Hoop, who is coming off a second-place finish at last year’s state meet at the Kentucky Horse Park.

    The team ran its first race of the season Sept. 8 at Henry County.
