    Playing in the rain, Team Dynamite finished on top, defeating Dynamo. Scoring was evenly spread among Jackson Spurgeon, Tori Lykins and Charlie Bauman.

  • Owen runs strong at NCKC meet

    The Owen County track team took part in the NCKC Conference Championships May 3 at Henry County. The team had several outstanding performances on both the boys and girls team.
    Danielle Hoop won the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:04.14 and the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:26.00. She also finished third in the 800-meter run. Haley Decandia finished third in the high jump.

  • Rebels split with Gallatin,...

    The Owen County High School baseball team split a pair of games last week.
    The Rebels shutout the Wildcats from Gallatin County Wednesday.
    The 5-0 win extended the Rebels’ winning streak to four games and gave them two wins in 31st District action.
    The streak, however, ended the next day when Tates Creek slid past Owen County, 4-3.
    Owen County opens play in the NCKC Tournament Wednesday against Trimble County.
    They will then play the first of their final three home games of the season Monday, starting against Frankfort.
     

  • Lady Rebels come up short...

    Last Wednesday was a day of mixed results for the Owen County High School softball team.
    The Lady Rebels began play in the NCKC Tournament at home against Trimble County.
    Owen County won the hard-fought contest, 4-3, to set up a match with Walton-Verona immediately after the first game.
    The game was the third meeting between the two schools this season. Owen County won the first, 10-6, at Walton before the Lady Bearcats returned the favor with an 8-6 win at Gallatin County in the All “A” Classic.

  • Clouds break, soccer players...

    The beautiful weather over the weekend allowed the Owen County Youth Soccer League its first full weekend of play. All teams were in action this weekend for the first time all season.
    The league consists of 6 U6 teams, 4 U8 teams, 2 U10 mixed teams, 1 U10 girls team and 1 U12 mixed team.

  • Wild weekend at Western Hills

    The Owen County High School softball team spent the weekend in Frankfort. The team took part in the Western Hills Tournament Friday and Saturday. The Lady Rebels dropped a pair of games while picking up one win.
    The team began the tournament Friday night when they took on the top-ranked team from the 10th Region, George Rogers Clark.
    After jumping out to a 2-0 lead, the Lady Rebels’ defense let them down, putting them in a 5-2 hole. The Lady Rebels got a run in the seventh, but it was not enough as they lost, 5-3.

  • Track team still busting records

    The sun came out Saturday and the Owen County track teams took advantage.
    The boys and the girls competed at the Grant County Invitational and both teams came home with third-place finishes. Owen County set six new school records Saturday. Five were set by the boys and one by the girls.
    The girls’ record was set by Kaylynn Workman who finished sixth overall in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 57.67. Haley Decandia finished eighth.

  • Rebels string together three...

    The Owen County Rebels took advantage of the sunshine Friday and Saturday. The team hosted the Owen County Invitational that included Lloyd, Frankfort and Williamstown.
    The Rebels opened the weekend Friday by taking on the Juggernauts from Lloyd.
    Owen County won the game, 6-5.
    The win avenged a 5-2 loss to Lloyd back in March.
    Also Friday, Frankfort slipped by Williamstown, 7-6.
    Saturday, Owen County won another one-run contest as they defeated Williamstown, 4-3, and they pounded Frankfort, 12-2, in five innings.

  • Owen relay teams smashing school...

    The Owen County High School boys’ relay teams have been having a great season so far in 2011.
    At a recent meet in Grant County, they were not just good, they were record breaking.
    Paul Banks, Collin Trammel, Bobby Mingie and Darian Polley make up both the 4x100 meter and the 4x200-meter teams.
    Both teams finished first at Grant County.
    Their time of 46.45 in the 4x100-meter was good for a new school record as was their time of 1:37 in the 4x200-meter relay.

  • More honors for Rianna Gayheart

    The post-season honors continue to pile up for Owen County High School junior Rianna Gayheart.
    The Lady Rebel guard had already been named Eighth Region Player of the Year.
    Last week, she received more recognition.
    She was named honorable mention All State by the Lexington Herald-Leader.
    Gayheart was also selected to play for the Kentucky Junior All Stars.
    Her team will be taking on the Kentucky Senior All-Star team the week before the seniors play the Indiana Senior All Stars.
