    Stats are important in sports but they often don’t tell the entire story.

    It is true that the 2009-2010 Owen County High School Rebels will have to find out how to replace 52 percent of the team’s scoring lost on graduation day ,but they will also be looking for two more ingredients that can’t be found on the stat sheet. They are experience and leadership.

  • Lady Rebels hope for third-time...

    Winning back-to-back 31st District titles is never easy. Winning a third straight will be even harder.

    Yet, that’s the goal heading into the 2009-2010 season for the Owen County Lady Rebels. The goals do not stop there.

    Expectations surrounding the team are high and not just in Owen County. One publication in the state has the Owen County girls ranked as the third best team in the eighth region.

  • Cooking up some Golden Gobble...

    It is a tough time to be a turkey. With Thanksgiving just hours away, Toms everywhere are sweating. Many have spent the last few weeks looking for the perfect weight-loss plan in hopes of missing the ultimate cut.

    Turkeys have not been the only ones losing their heads lately. There have been people losing theirs in the world of sports during the past year. I am here to call them out.

  • Owen’s Hoop, Spaulding...

    A seventh-grader from Sayre School in Lexington surprised everyone last week by winning the regional cross-country meet at Trimble County. What would Maddox Peterson do for an encore?

    To prove what she did last week was no fluke, Peterson won the Class A State Cross Country Meet Saturday at the Kentucky Horse Park.

  • A Review of the 2008-2009 Lady...

    The Owen County Lady Rebels entered the 2008-2009 season as the defending 31st district champs. When the season ended last March, the title remained theirs.

    The Lady Rebels finished the season with a 19-8 record while losing back-to-back games only once.

    After losing the first game of 2009 at Carroll County, the girls won 12 of the final 15 games heading into the district tournament.

    The season was full of exciting moments. Owen County Lady Rebels Head Basketball Coach Bob Osborne’s team played 12 games that were decided by five points or less.

  • A Review of the 2008-2009 Rebels...

    The 2008-2009 basketball season was full of ups and downs for the Owen County Rebels.

    A season that began with high expectations got off to a rocky start.

    Following an opening night loss the Rebels won their next two games. The win Dec. 9, 2008, over Trimble County would be the Rebels’ last win against a North American team until after New Year’s Day. Owen County defeated the Australian National Team Dec. 30, 2008, at the Coca-Cola/Campbellsville University Classic.

  • Young Owen Co. football squads...

    The undefeated seasons of the Owen County Youth Mighty Pro and Power House football teams came to a screeching halt last Sunday. Both teams were upset in their respective Super Bowl games. The following are results from the NCKYFL Playoffs and Super Bowls:

  • Hoop and Spaulding to run at...

    Before the gun sounded to begin Saturday’s Region 5A Cross County Meet, Danielle Hoop thought her biggest competition would come from Danville’s Kaitlin Snapp.

    The two have battled each other for the last couple of seasons at the regional meet.

    In the latest rankings, Snapp was ranked first in the Class A while Hoop was ranked second.

    At Trimble County Park Saturday, Hoop beat Snapp to the finish line. The only problem was that neither one was thinking about a seventh-grader from Sayre.

  • Indians prove too much for Rebels

    Heading into Friday night’s first-round playoff game versus Holy Cross, Owen County knew the person they had to stop in order to have a chance at coming away with the victory. As it turned out, stopping Markel Walker was something the Rebels could not do.

    Walker had a hand in all five of the Indians’ first-half touchdowns to give Holy Cross a 34-3 lead at halftime. They never looked back.

  • Playoff Preview

    Opponent: Covington Holy Cross Indians

    Place: Scott High School, Taylor Mill

    Time: 7 p.m.

    • The Indians finished the season 5-5 overall and 2-1 in the District 6. They defeated Newport and Lloyd and lost to Newport Central Catholic.

    • Holy Cross is coached by Bruce Kozerski. Bengal fans may be familiar with Kozerski, who played for the orange and black for 12 seasons. He was a member of the Superbowl team that lost to the San Francisco 49ers in 1989.
