  • Lady Rebels win season opener...

    It was a winning weekend for the Owen County girls’ soccer team. The team opened the season on Saturday at home against South Laurel. The Lady Rebels got a pair of goals from Hailey Chappell as they defeated the Lady Cardinals 5-4. It was the first time since 2005 the team has won their opening match. They had tied in 2007 and 2011.
    Hyper Chamberlin, Meagan Bruener, and Hailey Gordon also had goals in the win.

    The boys’ soccer team was in action three times last week.
    They fell 5-1 to Villa Madonna, 6-2 against Walton-Verona and 7-2 to South Laurel. They will be back in action Monday at Grant County. The Braves defeated the Rebels 3-1 last season.
     

  • Rebels looking to improve on the...

    The Owen County Rebels are beginning the 2016 soccer season this week.
    As they enter the new season, the team will be looking to improve upon the 2015 campaign that saw them win just four games. First-year head coach JR Herdman says the process is something that will happen one game at a time.
    “My expectations of this team is to be competitive and improve every time we step on the field,” Herdman said.

    Entering the 2016 soccer season, the Owen County Lady Rebels are hoping to achieve something that has not taken place since 2012. That was the last year the team captured the 31st District title and advanced to the 8th Region Tournament.

  • Lady Rebels swing back into...

    The Owen County Lady Rebels are continuing to play outstanding golf.
    On Aug. 6, the team traveled to play in the Villa Madonna Tournament in Independence. The team took on 23 other schools and finished fifth overall, tied with Notre Dame.
    “These girls are still amazing me this year,” Head Coach David Wainscott said.
    Debbie Farrar led the team with an 83, while Lydia Merrifield posted an 84. Grace Chilton fired an 86, Morgan Woodyard 92, and Laura Duke 105.

  • Volleyball set for beginning of...

    The Owen County volleyball team got their season started this week.
    The Lady Rebels took on Calvary Christian at home Aug. 8 and traveled to play at Franklin County Aug. 9. They entered both matches hoping to avenge losses a year ago to both squads.

    The 2016 golf season has teed off for the Owen County Lady Rebels.

    The team has already played in five tournaments this season. They began the year at the Pendleton County Tournament on July 29 where they finished second as a team. Senior Lydia Merrifield was third overall as an individual. The next day the team took part in the Lady Rockets Golf Classic at Shelby County where they finished eighth out of 17 teams.

    SPARTA, Ky. — Brad Keselowski squeezed enough fuel out of his Team Penske Miller Lite Ford to hold off hard-charging Carl Edwards to win Saturday’s sixth annual Quaker State 400 Presented by Advance Auto Parts. The win was “Bad Brad’s” third to go along with two other top five finishes in the six Sprint Cup races held at Kentucky Speedway.

    Even though the basketball season for the Runnin’ Rebels came to a close in early March, Carson Williams still had one more performance on his home court for Owen County basketball fans Thursday night.

    Williams led the scoring effort by the senior team at the Kentucky All-Star Classic with a game-high 23 points. The seniors, who had a commanding 18-point lead at the half, defeated the junior team 121-87 when the final buzzer sounded.

  • Walton-Verona ends Rebels quest...

    The Owen County baseball team saw their season come to an end last Monday in Carrollton.

    The Rebels took on Walton-Verona in the opening round of the Eighth Region Tournament. The two teams had split a pair of meetings during the regular season. The Bearcats would get the best of the Rebels defeating them 7-2 on Monday to advance to the semifinals and end Owen County’s season. The game was the final contest for seniors, Michael Dunaway, Jacob Harris, Trevor Smith and Michael Stewart.
