  • Winning streak against Grant ends

    The Owen County High School football team traveled to Dry Ridge Saturday night and hoped to keep a streak alive.
    But it was the streaks in the sky that ended the night before it began.
    Lightning and heavy rain forced the Rebels’ game on Saturday night with Grant County High School to be pushed back to Sunday night.
    When the night was over, the Braves had put an end to the Rebels three-game winning streak against them as they defeated Owen County 35-10.

  • Rebel Ramblings: At Henry County

    Friday • 7:30 p.m.

    • The Wildcats will enter Friday night’s contest after defeating Carroll County High School 14-7 last Friday night.
    • Henry County is coached by Jason Spencer, who is in his third year at the helm. His career record is 6-18.
    • The last meeting between the two schools was back in 2010 when Henry County defeated Owen County 54-12 in Owenton.

  • New faces equal same result for...

    It does not matter who Owen County High School Head Girls Golf Coach David Wainscott puts on the course, the Lady Rebels continue to dominate the Eighth Region All ‘A’ Classic.
    Owen County had four new faces tee off on Tuesday at Sugar Bay Golf Course in Warsaw. They still won their fifth-straight Eighth Region All ‘A’ Classic by 24 strokes over Trimble County High School which finished second.
    Owen County’s Shelby Power and Walton-Verona’s Adrianne Mason both shot 74.

  • Lady Rebels soccer gets first...

    The Owen County High School Lady Rebels soccer team only played one game last week and they made the most of it.
    The Owen County played its first road game of the season Aug. 28 as they traveled to Carrollton to take on the Lady Panthers.
    The Lady Rebels won both meetings between the two schools last year by a combined score of 7-1. They would not miss a beat this year as they got two second-half goals from Hailey Chappell to get their first win of 2013 by the final score of 2-0.

  • Boys finish third in OCIT

    The Owen County High School boys’ soccer team came into Saturday hoping some home cooking would bring about better results.
    The Rebels hosted the Owen County Invitational Tournament on Saturday and welcomed Covington Latin, Holmes and Carroll County high schools to Owenton.
    The Rebels began the tournament by taking on Covington Latin.
    The Trojans emerged from the well-played game with a 1-0 victory.
    It was a bit of revenge for Covington Latin. Owen County knocked them off 4-0 last year in the opening game.

  • Sports briefs: OCHS Volleyball

    • The Owen County High School volleyball team was in action last week. On Tuesday, the team traveled to take on Walton-Verona. The team lost in two sets to the Lady Bearcats.
    Two days later, Owen County hit the road again for a game at Henry County. After falling behind two sets to one, the team was able to force a fifth and final set only to eventually fall.

  • Sports briefs: Cross Country

    • The Owen County High School cross-country team opened its season on Saturday at the Ryle Invitational. For the boys, it was Hunter Trenary who finished sixth; Keith Stout, 71st; Cory Hudhal, 99; Logan Bitler, 107th; and Kyle Flood. 139th.
    In the girls’ race, Autumn Hunter placed 37th; Ardri Hager, 66; and Samantha Tamplin, 69.

  • Sports briefs: Boys Golf

    • The Owen County High School boys’ golf team was in action last week taking on Williamstown. The team improved to 5-2 on the season as they defeated the Demons. Freshman Jordan Wilhoite was the medalist as he fired a 46. Eighth-grader Grant Cobb shot 54 while sixth-graders Mason Roberts and Braden Howard shot 59 and 67


  • Rebels drop season opener on road

    The Owen County High School football team hopes Friday night’s loss at Western Hills High School will be a learning experience for a young team.
    For the second year in a row, the Rebels traveled to Frankfort to take on the Wolverines.
    After winning big last year, Owen County mistakes and a solid ground game by Western Hills led to a 33-6 defeat to begin the season.
    It is the second season in a row the Rebels have lost their first game of the season. Owen County began last year with a loss at Lloyd Memorial in Erlanger.

  • Rebel Ramblings: At Grant County...

    • Owen County defeated Grant County 44-14 last season in Dry Ridge. It was the third-straight win over the Braves.
    • Grant County is under the direction of second-year head coach Kevin Siple.
    • The Braves finished 3-7 last year and failed to make the playoffs.
    • Grant County will be playing its home opener on Saturday night after losing 48-20 last Saturday at Middlesboro.
    • Since 2000, the Rebels are 3-5 against Grant County.
