  • Rebels clinch No. 1 tourney seed

    The week began with a close win and then ended with a close defeat but in between, the Owen County High School boys basketball team was part of a meaningful blowout.
    The Runnin’ Rebels began last week with a pair of home games. The first was an NCKC contest with Williamstown High School on Senior Night.
    The second was a district showdown with the top seed in the upcoming 31st District tournament on the line.
    Before warming up for the Feb. 18 contest with the Demons, Owen County fans had a chance to say thank you to five Rebel seniors.

  • Boys’ 31st District Tournament...

    • The tournament began Monday night when Carroll County High School took on Eminence in the opening round game. The winner will play Owen County tonight (Wednesday) at 6 p.m. at Carroll County.
    • The championship game will be on Friday night in Carrollton at 7 p.m.
    • Owen County is the two-time defending champion and has won three of the last five titles.
    • Gallatin County is the last team to win three-straight district titles between 2006 and 2008.

  • Girls’ 31st District Tournament...

    • Owen County opened the tournament Monday night as they took on Eminence. The winner played Gallatin County Tuesday night.
    • The championship game will be played on Thursday night at 7 p.m.
    • Gallatin County is the defending champion. They knocked off Owen County 43-36 in last year’s championship game.
    • Before last year, Owen County had won five-straight district titles.

  • Lady Rebels close out tough...

    The regular season wrapped up for the Owen County Lady Rebels. The team played three games last week to prepare for the 31st District Tournament.
    The girls began the week by hitting the road to taken on Walton-Verona High School on Feb. 17.
    The Lady Bearcats raced out to an 18-3 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back as they cruised to the 65-20 win.
    A.J. Gravely led the Lady Rebels by scoring 9 points. Kaylee Miller tossed in 4; Molly Gamble, 3; and Debbie Farrar and Kendrah Ashby each finished with 2 points.

  • Rebels drop two of three in...

    Owen County High School Head Boys Basketball Coach Devin Duvall likes to spend the last few games of the season to get his team tournament ready.
    The last three game stretch was that preparation.
    Owen County hosted North Oldham High School last week before playing both Anderson County and South Oldham high schools on the road.
    South Oldham is the defending Eighth Region champion while Anderson County High School reached the semifinals of the Eighth Region tournament. The Bearcats advanced by defeating the Rebels 50-47 in the quarterfinals.

  • Lady Rebels ready for last two...

    A long season for the Owen County High School Lady Rebels is coming to a close. Lady Rebels are gearing up for their final two homes games of the 2013-2014 campaign.
    The team played a road contest last week in Taylorsville against Spencer County High School. Owen County was able to score its most points of the season but unfortunately it would not be enough. The Lady Bears would defeat the Lady Rebels 71-51 to pick up their fifth win of the season and keeping Owen County winless.

  • Rebels keep at home unbeaten...

    There is no place like home and for the Owen County High School Rebels, nothing has been truer this season.
    Owen County hosted a pair of games this week and won both of them to improve to a perfect 5-0 on their home court.
    The first came on Feb. 6 as the team welcomed Walton-Verona to Owenton. The game had a different feel to it due to an electrical problem that caused the scoreboards not to work. As a result, the score and the time were both kept at the scorer’s table by hand.

  • Bad luck streak continues for...

    If not for bad luck, the Owen County High School Lady Rebels would have no luck at all.
    The team hosted Oldham County Friday night in Owenton.
    After falling behind early, the Lady Rebels rallied to cut the deficit to 14-7 with just seconds left in the opening quarter.
    Instead of carrying some positive feelings into the second quarter it proved to be just enough time for the Lady Colonels. Oldham County caught the inbounds pass and launched a heave from 70 feet at the buzzer that hit nothing but net to push the lead to 17-7.

  • Hard-fought victory: Rebels win...

    The Owen County High School boy’s basketball team should be very familiar with the gym at Eminence High School.
    The Rebels traveled to Eminence for the fourth time in a week Jan. 29.
    They were going to take on the Warriors but also to try and erase the memory of their previous game two nights before.
    It was against Carroll County in Eminence where the Rebels saw their dream of winning three-straight Eighth Region All ‘A’ Classic titles end.

  • Lady Rebels foiled in the fourth...

    With eight minutes to go. a win was within reach.
    The Owen County Lady Rebels hosted Carroll County High School Friday night. It was the second meeting of the season between the two schools.
    The Lady Panthers got the best of the Lady Rebels in Carrollton on Dec. 13 winning 57-37. It appeared for three quarters on Friday that Owen County might return the favor in Owenton.
    Owen County played hard for the first three quarters but trailed 37-35 as the fourth quarter began.
