  • Owen Co. girls squad wrap up...

The Lady Rebels spent the week after Christmas traveling back and forth between Owenton and Frankfort. The team took part in the Wolverine Classic at Western Hills High School.

Owen County played three games in the tournament going 2-1. The girls opened the tournament by taking on East Jessamine. Rianna Gayheart had 21 points but it was not enough as the Lady Rebels fell, 43-38.

Owen County squared off against 8th Region foe South Oldham on day two.

  • Boys back from Florida; grab...

After a week of planes, hotels  and Walt Disney World, the Owen County Rebels returned home from Florida Thursday.

After making it through security and a bumpy flight, the Rebels played three games while in Orlando and went 2-1.

In the first game, they defeated a team from Ranney, N.J., 81-17. They then squeaked past a team from Ambridge, Penn., 51-50, before finally losing to a squad from Westtown, Penn., 63-35.

When they were not playing games, the team enjoyed time at Disneyworld and Universal Studios.

  • Lady Rebels drop two at Lady...

The days leading up to Christmas provided the Owen County High School girl’s basketball team one nice gift and two lumps of coal.

The Lady Rebels played in the Max Performance Lady Rocket Invitational at Shelby County last week. The team went 1-2 for the event, defeating Owensboro and losing to Shelby County and Anderson County.

The week began with a game against the Lady Rockets from Shelby County. The game was a measuring stick for the Lady Rebels since Carroll County had defeated Shelby County earlier in the season.

  • Year in Review: Several familiar...

The more things change the more they stay the same.

That was the case in 2009 when it came to sports. Look back at the teams and players that won championships and I think you will agree.

Start in February at the Super Bowl XLIV when the Pittsburgh Steelers won yet another title after it appeared the upstart Arizona Cardinals and their “old man” quarterback, Kurt Warner, were going to win their first – that is before Ben Rothlisberger found Santanio Holmes for the winning score with just seconds remaining.

  • Lady Rebels drop pair at home

The road had been kind to the Lady Rebels during the first two weeks of the season. Owen County Coach Bob Osborne’s team had played four games away from Owenton and had won all four. Most people expected the success to continue when the team played its first two home games last week.

The Lady Rebels hosted a pair of 31st District rivals in Gallatin County and Henry County. The first game came against the Lady Wildcats from Warsaw.

The Lady Rebels got off to a slow start as they trailed 11-8 at the end of the first quarter.

  • Rebels win one, lose one

What started out as a promising week fell flat for the Owen County Rebels.

The Rebels entered last week riding a four-game winning streak as they welcomed Gallatin County to town for a 31st District showdown.

The game began with both teams running up and down the court at a frenetic pace. The Wildcats took a 19-17 lead after one quarter.

The beginning of the second quarter was much the same until Blake Lewis connected from 3-point range to give the Rebels their first lead at 27-24 with 4:20 left in the half.

  • Owen County boys secure wins...

Following a 2-1 week to open the season, the Owen County Rebels hit the road for a pair of important road games last week.

After committing 33 turnovers in their opening night loss, senior Blake Lewis said the team has been “working on the little things” in practice.

Lewis said after a week of playing against teams that seemed content to play zone defense against the Rebels’ strong inside game, it was going to be important for him and Stone Osborne to start knocking down shots.

  • Preview: Rebels ready to host...

    Opponent: Henry County Wildcats

    Where: Owen County High School

    When: Friday at 8 p.m.

What more can be said about three of the four meetings between these two teams last year. Two were decided at the buzzer and both teams had to watch the other cut down the nets at Carroll County. Henry County defeated Owen County to win the 8th Region All “A” Classic in Carrollton in January. Owen County then beat Henry County in the same gym in February to claim the 31st district championship.

  • Pair of Rebels named NCKC Player...

A pair of Owen County boys basketball players have been named North Central Kentucky Conference Player of the Week for the first two weeks of the season.

Rebel sophomore Sawyer Williams had a tremendous opening week for the Owen County basketball team.  For the week Dec. 1- 6, the sophomore big man averaged 18 points and nine rebounds. Williams shot 70 percent from the field in the three games. The Rebels went 2-1 last week, picking up wins over Williamstown and Berea.

  • Lady Rebels grab wins at Trimble...

The Lady Rebels’ road trip to open the season came to a successful conclusion last week. The team picked up a win at Trimble County Dec. 8 and another against Carroll County Friday night to remain perfect on the young season.

Against the Lady Raiders, three Lady Rebels scored in double figures to power the team to a 56-36 win. Rianna Gayheart and Jensen Wainscott each had 11 points while Samantha Toole added 10 points in the victory.
