Penske Racing driver Brad Keselowski wrapped up a competitive three-race weekend at the Kentucky Speedway in Sparta with his second victory in three years, leading 199 of the 267 laps of Saturday’s Quaker State 400 en route to the win. Keselowski placed fifth in Thursday’s UNOH 225 Truck race behind winner Kyle Busch and second in Friday’s Natiowide race won by Kevin Harvick.
The minor league Owen County Maroon Rebels fought through three tough games this past week to end up with only two losses on the season.
After wins June 16 and 17 against the Henry County Twins and Carroll County Cubs respectfully, the Rebels fell to the Henry County Rockies by one in the fifth inning.
Despite this loss, the team still earned the title of league champions.
Coaches Robin Cobb and Tim MacIntosh said they had never coached a team with so much heart and love of the game.
The Owen County Minor League Maroon team recently played three great games and won two of the three.
On June 5 at home, the team won against the Henry County Twins 5-4 with Eli Rice and Caleb Stafford on the pitchers’ mound.
A 12-7 win against the Henry County Whitesocks in Henry County June 6 was a nail-biter but the team played tough and pulled a victory out in the last two innings.
On June 7, the Maroon Rebels could not pull out the win as the Henry County Reds gave them the first loss of the season, 5-7.
The 2014 Owen County High School Lady Rebels fast pitch team faced the difficult task of replacing eight seniors from last year’s team. The only two returning seniors were Allison Dempsey and Krissy Swigert.
After a slow start to the season, the team came on strong winning six out of the last eight games to finish the year with an 8-12 record with wins over Henry County twice, Bryan Station and Shelby County high schools.
The Owen County Youth Soccer League held its inaugural Halloween Express of Lexington Memorial Challenge May 24 at the Owen County High School.
The event was a great success due to the support of our local businesses, community and parents.
The Owen County High School baseball team was making its third straight appearance in the Eighth Region baseball tournament May 26 in Henry County.
The Rebels entered their contest with Simon Kenton hoping to advance to the semifinals for the first time since 2007.
The Pioneers were looking to advance for the second straight season by knocking out a 31st District opponent. They defeated Gallatin County in the quarterfinals last season.
The Pioneers would get quality pitching and timely hitting to defeat the Rebels 5-1 to end Owen County’s season.
Several members of the Owen County High School track team spent Saturday morning taking part in the Class A State Track Meet at the University of Kentucky. Each of them represented themselves and their school well.
he top finisher was Hunter Trenary, who finished third in the 3200- meter run. This was an improvement for the senior who finished seventh in the same event last year.
Also for the boys, it was Seth Shafer placing 23rd in the discus while the 4x800-meter relay team of Kyler Law, Cory Hudnall, Daniel Lopez and Keith Stout placed 15th.
By reaching the 31st District championship game May 23, the Owen County High School baseball team assured a third-straight trip to the Eighth Region baseball tournament.
They were also hoping for something a little more as well.
The Rebels began the tournament May 19 in New Castle and needed two wins to reach the championship game.
The defending district champs played like it on the first two nights as they knocked off Eminence 10-0 in the first round and Gallatin County High School 5-0 in the semifinals.
In their first two meetings this season Gallatin County outscored Owen County by a combined 15-2 score. Things would be much closer when the two squared off last week in the semifinals of the 31st District tournament.
It was the sixth time the schools had met in the tournament dating back to 2006.
Owen County won the first three meetings rather handily. Gallatin County then turned the tables defeating the Lady Rebels in the 2012 championship game and also in the 2013 semifinals. Both were one-run contests.
