  • Lady Rebels weather storm to win a pair

    The Owen County Lady Rebels took part in the “Where’s the Beach Classic” over the weekend in Rockcastle County. Maybe the event should have been named the “Where’s the Basement Classic?”
    After playing Friday night and losing 2-1 to Clay County in extra innings, the Lady Rebels were facing two more games Saturday. They did not know they would be taking on the weather as well.

  • Rebel bats come alive

    The results may not have been what they wanted, but there were positive signs last week for the Owen County baseball team. The Rebels played five games last week and won two, but the team scored double-digit runs in three of the contests.
    Owen County began the week with a 19-10 win over Frankfort.
    They then dropped a 5-2 decision to Lloyd. The Rebels then produced another offensive outburst as they defeated Eminence, 13-2.
    The team then closed out the week with a pair of games at Pendleton County. The Rebels dropped the first 12-10 and the second 9-6.

  • Softball team earns some early revenge

     It was a week that offered mixed results for the Owen County softball team. The Lady Rebels played a pair of games against 31st District rivals picking up a win and a loss.
    The week began with a game in New Castle against Henry County. The Lady Wildcats got the best of the Lady Rebels with a 6-1 win.
    Owen County then remained on the road as they travelled to Warsaw to take on Gallatin County. It was the second meeting between the two schools in nine days.

  • Owen outlasts Grant

    The rivalry may not be what it once was, but don’t tell that to members of the Owen County or Grant County boys’ basketball teams. The two schools — that for years played heated contests in equally hot and cramped gymnasiums — played another close game Saturday in Dry Ridge.
    The gyms may now be bigger but the game Saturday was equally good. On Saturday night, Owen County held off Grant County for a 73-67 win.
    It was the second win this season over Grant County.

  • Williams honored for gridiron efforts

    Owen County High School junior Sawyer Williams may be busy on the hardwood these days, but he was recently honored for his efforts last fall on the gridiron.
    Williams was named as an honorable mention to the Kentucky All-State High School Football Team.
    For the season, Williams led the Rebels in tackles with 62 and fumble recoveries with three.
    Owen County High School Head Football Coach Adam Fowler said Sawyer is nearly unblockable on the defensive line when he gets after the quarterback.

  • Rebels two timing

    It was a week of streaks for the Owen County High School Boys Basketball team. Two streaks to be exact, and both involve the number two.
    On Jan. 4, the Rebels defeated Gallatin County for the second time this season. The 54-50 victory marked the first time since 2005 Owen County has won two straight over their rivals from Warsaw.
    “It’s the first time in a long time,” said Justin Shelton of the two-game winning streak.

  • Girls’ 8th Region All ‘A’ Classic preview

    Where: Walton-Verona High School
    When: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights
    What is at stake: A trip to Richmond for the State All ‘A’ Classic Feb. 2-6

    Last year in Warsaw it was Walton-Verona who cut down the nets as they defeated Carroll County, Owen County and Gallatin County on their way to the championship.
    The Lady Bearcats’ win last year was their first trip to Richmond since 2000 when they won the tournament at Trimble County.

  • Ripy named player of the week

    For the second-consecutive week, a Runnin’ Rebel has been named NCKC Player of the Week.
    Sophomore guard  Zach Ripy scored 27 points in two conference wins over Trimble  County and Carroll County
    Ripy shot over 50 percent from the floor while handing out seven assists  with six steals.

  • Model champions

    If the Owen County Rebels fell asleep before midnight on New Year’s Eve, it would be hard to blame them.
    The team had just finished four games in three days that led to their winning the Shirley Kearns Invitational at Model Laboratory High School in Richmond.
    Owen County opened up pool play Dec. 28 against Clinton County.
    The Rebels got off to a good start before allowing the Bulldogs to get back in the game. In the end, the Rebels prevailed with a 65-56 win.

  • Lady Rebels catch a good break

    While most were returning unwanted sweaters at the mall last week, the Owen County Lady Rebels were playing some of their best basketball of the season.
    Last week, the team spent three days in Shelby County taking part in the Max Performance Invitational.
    After falling in their opener against Male High School, the Lady Rebels cruised to a pair of victories over Shelby County and Bishop Brossart.
    Owen County began the week with a match-up against the Lady Bulldogs from Male. The game was tight for three quarters.
