Hunters may now apply online for quota hunts for deer, small game and waterfowl on state wildlife management areas (WMAs). Those without computer access may still register over the telephone by calling (877) 598-2401. This toll-free number is staffed 24 hours a day.
The application period for state WMA quota hunts ends Sept. 30. Kentucky state parks are also offering special bow hunting packages that are not quota hunts, but reserved on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The carpenter bees are doing a number on our house. We perfectly fit the profile of a desirable place to lay your eggs for this rather docile bee and they are busy around the frame of the garage as I write. I do have a plan.

I am always a little annoyed when people ask me how to get rid of bees. Short of a deathly allergy, we should all be lucky enough to have a healthy population in the garden. I have tons out and about the landscape, in the clover where I walk daily, in the garden where I work, amid the flowers where I weed — and I have never been stung.
