There are three things that are constant for the middle of November:

The leaves have all fallen off the trees.

The temperature gets colder.

The Bengals are eliminated from playoff contention.

I guess one out of three isn’t bad.

Who would have thought that at this time of the year it would be 70 degrees and the Bengals would be 7-2 and in first place in the AFC North? 

Let me digress for just a moment and say that if this last weekend was an example of global warming, then keep it coming.  

(I) traveled to Washington, D.C., Nov. 4-5 to encourage our congress to vote no on the health-care bill.

There are many unhealthy proposals included in the bill including taxpayer-funded abortion and a generous portion to fund a private-sector military “Americorp” controlled by the President.

Does this sound like a rerun from World War II? Please pray this bill does not pass the Senate.

Already Medicare and Medicaid are in debt $42 trillion. Does this sound like another great adventure for our government to embark on? I pray not.

I once knew a man who got kicked out of his Blue Christmas therapy group because he was a little bit too cheerful. I thought about him last week as I stumbled through yet another Halloween.

For some, Halloween is all about the supernatural, the scary stuff like “the living dead” and werewolves.

The school colors may be maroon and white, but next week, students in the Owen County School District will be wearing red in honor of Red Ribbon Week.

The national awareness week began in the late 1980s in honor of Drug Enforcement Agent Enrique (Kiki) S. Camarena who had spent four and a half years on the trail of one of Mexico’s biggest marijuana and cocaine traffickers. Just days before Camarena was to make a bust that would unlock the pipeline that sent many drugs into the United States, he was kidnapped. His body was discovered nearly a month later.

When I married Dennis Lafferty in 1970, I moved from Sparta to the “country.”

I did not know much about farming. My family had always  been in the grocery business, so all I knew was the farmer got paid once a year.

It was not long until I realized you could not make a farming decision until you contacted Jane Ann Johnson. Whatever Jane Ann told you was always just the way it was.

To err is human. To admit to it is something else.

Two weeks ago at the state golf tournament in Bowling Green, Emma Talley made a mistake.

On the surface, it was not a big deal and would not have hindered the outcome of the tournament. In fact, had she not said anything it’s possible no one would have ever known of the mistake.

Instead, the sophomore from Caldwell County realized she had not made a par on the 18th hole as was written down on her scorecard. She had made a bogey.

My name is Pamela Roy. I’m from Macedonia Baptist Church. I would like to thank you for allowing us to clean the roads to earn money for church camp. Church camp is so much fun. I always have a wonderful time learning about God and hanging out with my youth.

I have always loved the peace and serenity that one finds out in the country. I suppose it stems from growing up so far back in the woods that even trackers couldn’t find us.

There is something so refreshing to the soul about hearing the sound of birds chirping in the trees and frogs calling from the pond.

Like so many people, even in Owen County, my life is full of hustle and bustle and I rarely find solitary moments where I can just “be.”

Macedonia Baptist Church youth group would like to thank Owen County for letting us clean up the roads. The money is used for camp in June, which everyone is looking forward to. Thank you very much.
