Owen County Emergency Management has announced the launch of Kentucky’s Yellow Dot program, designed to improve emergency care to motorists involved in a vehicle crash.

The “dot” is a circular yellow sticker which is placed on the lower left corner of the driver’s side rear window and alerts emergency responders that a pamphlet with identification and medical information about the motorist is in the glove box.

  • 25 ways to eat better in the New Year:

To help with portion control, use the smallest plate that will hold your food.

At mealtime, serve from the stove instead of putting a serving bowl on the table.

Make double vegetables and serve them first, to take the focus off meat.

    Switch to whole wheat pasta.

Eat vegetarian one night a week.

Cut back on butter or margarine—newer whole grain breads are tasty on their own.

Indeed, the fall season lasted just into January 2016! The ferns that hang from lamp posts in Old Louisville finally got zapped by a freeze just after the new year. Winter jasmine is in bloom, among other late winter bloomers, and a few spring flowering trees have broken bud! Our current cool down is welcome just to slow things down a bit.

  • Standby generators provide emergency electrical power during disruptions caused by winter storms and other disasters. However, you need to take some special precautions to ensure safe, efficient operation of these generators.

  • Every time you bring a load of firewood inside this winter, you may be opening the door for wood-infesting insects to make your home their home.

Most insects brought into the home on firewood are harmless, but you can greatly reduce their numbers by following a few simple steps:

Every couple of years I like to revisit my father’s favorite Christmas poem inspired by Clement Moore’s famous work ‘A Visit from St. Nicholas.’  The writer of the poem is unknown but he or she certainly was a gardener; and you may even get some last minute gift ideas from its verse.

  • George Orwell once said: “The planting of a tree, especially one of the long-living hardwood trees, is a gift which you can make to posterity at almost no cost and with almost no trouble, and if the tree takes root it will far outlive the visible effect of any of your other actions, good or evil.”

Now is the perfect time to consider adding value to your woodlot, making your land more attractive to wildlife or adding beauty to your home landscaping by planting some trees in the spring.

County road crews stayed busy earlier this week as several inches of snow fell across Owen County temperatures plummeted into the teens. Owen County Road Supervisor and Solid Waste Coordinator Greg Smoot said although one truck wasn’t operating no major problems occurred.

  • If you’ve been patient and waited the five to seven years it takes to grow and maintain Christmas trees to get them ready for sale, you’re might be wondering how to best market them to customers.

Marketing real Christmas trees has some unique pros and cons. You’ll have a guaranteed annual market, and since fresh Christmas trees only have a two to four week life expectancy after cutting, customers must replace them every year. The appeal of having a fresh Christmas tree each year is enticing to many people, usually part of family and cultural traditions.

Holiday greenery has a history that goes well beyond the Victorian Christmas tree we gather around today.  Most of the holiday greenery we use to decorate dates back to the pagan holidays of the Romans and Northern Europeans when certain plants were chosen for their symbolic powers of restoration and protection.

Owen County Emergency Management Agency reminds residents to remember safety tips while decorating for the holidays.

Be careful with holiday decorations. Choose decorations that are flame resistant or flame retardant. Keep lit candles away from decorations and other things that can burn.  Some lights are only for indoor or outdoor use, but not both.

I have always managed to do well with African violets. I generally keep them in bloom year round. Many complain that after the first flush of blooms fades the only thing left is a year’s worth of fuzzy foliage.

Well, with a little attention you can keep your African violet cycling in and out of bloom all year. The key is to create a favorable growing environment.
