In this week’s News-Herald, you can read a story outlining some of the new laws that will soon go into effect in Kentucky on June 25.
From my days covering the General Assembly, I learned that some laws are simply passed to appease a certain group or to make a political statement.
This year, the General Assembly enacted several new laws that will truly help the people of the commonwealth.
Here are some of my thoughts on some of the new laws:
It’s a beautiful morning on the Branch.
All my yellow lilies are blooming. We had rain again late Sunday afternoon. Fay said it poured at their house and they had over a half an inch.
The rain means I’ll be on the mower again by mid-week.
It’s too wet today and I have bridge tomorrow, so that means Wednesday, if it doesn’t rain again, I’ll mow.
Bluegrass Community and Technical College recently announced that two students from Owen County has achieved dean’s list honors for the 2013 fall semester.
David Cooper and William Ohmer Jr. were named to the dean’s list full-time students who have earned an overall semester grade point average of 3.5 or better in courses numbered 100 or above.
The Maurice Bowling Middle School track team recently honored some it best.
Andrew Banks and Audrey Hager were recognized for scoring the most points.
Ross Ford and Allison Burford were both named rookie of the year while Westley Johnson II and Conner Jacobs were presented the Coaches Award.
Ford, Hager, Jacobs, Cameron Morgan and Soloman Teehan were each recognized for their work in the classroom with the GPA Award.
Several students were honored by receiving their letter, insert and a bar.
June is the halfway point on the calendar and is highlighted by the longest day of the year: the official start of summer on Friday, June 21 this year.
For Kentucky’s 90,000 plus archery deer hunters, the Summer Solstice seems to trigger another seasonal phenomenon - the need to get ready for the upcoming hunting season.
Kentucky’s 136-day archery deer season opens in late summer, this year 15 days before the first day of fall. The season dates are Sept. 7, 2013 through Jan, 20, 2014.
