Gray Grisham named to Transy...

Owen County High School graduate and Transylvania University sophomore Gray Grisham has been named to the dean’s list for the 2013 winter term.
To be named to the dean’s list, a student must achieve at least a 3.5 grade point average during the term.
Grisham is the son of Glenn and Shawn Grisham of Owenton.
Transylvania, founded in 1780, is the nation’s sixteenth oldest institution of higher learning and is consistently ranked in national publications as one of the top liberal arts colleges in the country.

HotShots - 2 vs. Clemons - 2

Blaine Spencer scored first for the HotShots when he powered the ball to the back of the net in the second quarter.
Luke Myers played incredible defense for the HotShots stopping many scoring opportunities for Team Clemons. Team Clemons took the lead during the third quarter but the HotShots were determined to score again. Price Griffin shot one through the defense during the fourth quarter to end the game in a tie.

Softball team back on track

A week that began on a sour note finished strong for the Owen County High School softball team.
The Lady Rebels lost their first two games of the week before finishing with wins on Thursday and Saturday.
On May 7, the team traveled to take on Walton-Verona. The Lady Bearcats would score in every inning but the fourth and limit the Lady Rebels to just three hits in the Walton-Verona 7-0 victory. It was the third time this season Owen County has been shutout.

Special honor: Edward A. Webster

Edward A. Webster of Owenton has been commissioned at Kentucky Colonel by Gov. Steve Beshear on March 5, 2013. It is the highest award given by the commonwealth of Kentucky. Kentucky colonelships are commissioned for an individual’s contribution to his community, state, or nation and for special achievements. Edward is the son of Roy and Brenda Webster of Owenton; the grandson of Catherine and the late Walter Webster of Owenton and the late Robert and Mildred Furnish of Ghent.

Owen County Library trustee...

Richard Matthews, a member of the Owen County Public Library Board of Trustees, has completed the Kentucky Public Library Trustee Certification Program.
The trustee certification program is the first of its kind in the state and is available to all Kentucky public library trustees through the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives. It was created to provide trustees with tools to help fulfill their responsibilities to the libraries and their communities.

Neeley takes talent to...

Hannah Neeley ended her career at Owen County High School in March. She will begin a new career this fall in Lexington.
On Thursday, the senior signed a letter of intent to play college basketball at Transylvania University.
Neeley scored 1,347 points in her career and help lead the Lady Rebels to three straight 31st District titles during her four years. She and the team also reached the Eighth Region semifinals twice during her career and had a total of 72 victories.

The Facebook webpage “Owenton - KY Elementary School” has received a lot of  attention from News-Herald readers and I would like to thank the paper and supporters.
There are two additional pages I have recently created: Owenton -  KY High School” and “Owen County - KY High School.”
These are works in progress, which will be more interesting when the pages   are visited regularly, people make comments, and share their school   photos online. Many articles and pictures from the News-Herald have been  used.

Lettter to the Editor: Corinth...

The Corinth Rural Fire Board and Volunteer Fire Department have received a $100,000 FEMA grant for the purchase of a new 2,000 gallon water transport truck. The new equipment should be in the fleet within the next 45 days.
In addition, the above groups are working with Grant County Fiscal Court in preparation of a $200,000 grant to construct a new six bay firehouse. The building will have one bay devoted to house an ambulance to serve local area residents.
