Track team grabs second finish...

It was a good day at the Class A Region 5 Meet for the Owen County High School boys track team.
After a third-place finish a year ago the team put together a great day and came home with a second-place finish. The only team better was Burgin.
Several Rebels had outstanding days including Collin Trammel who won his second-straight regional title in the 200-meter dash.
Trammel, along with Paul Banks, Ian Oaks and Chris Smith, made up the 4x200-meter relay team which finished first.
The same four also placed second in the 4x100-meter relay.

Owen County is home to new state...

Owen County has a new state champion.
Members of the Owen County track teams headed to Louisville early Saturday morning to take part in the KHSAA Class A State Track Meet.
For one member of the team, it wasn’t enough to just win a state title. He also set a new state record.
Owen County High School senior Collin Trammel captured the title in the 200-meter dash in a time of 21.92 seconds.
He beat the record of 22 seconds set last year by Andre Klaassen from Whitefield Academy.

Alford joins News-Herald as...

The News-Herald would like to welcome Owen County High School graduate and Morehead State University student Mary Alford to our staff as a summer intern.
She is a second-generation journalist. Her father is Associated Press Reporter Roger Alford, who covers Frankfort and the General Assembly for the wire service.
“We are excited to bring Mary aboard,” News-Herald Editor John Whitlock said. “She will bring a new voice to the newspaper and we are all happy to have her.”

Benefits will cost county more

Uncertainty over new federal health-care regulations has Owen County public employees facing a possible 10 to 30 percent increase in the cost of benefits.
The Owen County Fiscal Court approved its 2013-14 budget at a May 14 meeting.
Owen County Judge-executive Carolyn Keith said county employees are currently receiving their health-care benefits from Anthem. A new provider could be chosen in the second half of the fiscal year.

Vision quest: Group looks back...

Since 2002, Leadership Owen County and more recently the Owen County Visioneers, have strived to not only bring tourism to the community but to show Owen countians just how much it has to offer.
The “Living the Dream” event was held Thursday at the Owen County Extension Office. Those in attendance took the opportunity to walk “Success Boulevard,” which showcased the achievements of Leadership Owen County and the Owen County Visioneers with a timeline.

Rebel losing streak is over

There are some streaks teams want to end - namely losing streaks.
The Owen County High School baseball team ended such a streak last week when they hosted Walton-Verona at Dunavent Field.
The Rebels had dropped eight-straight contests while Walton-Verona entered the game having won four in a row. One of the games in the middle of both streaks was a Bearcat 13-7 win over the Rebels on  April 30 in Verona.
Owen County would get a measure of revenge as they defeated the visitors 5-3 to improve its record to 14-13 on the season.

OCHS girls track team finishes...

The Owen County High School girls track team headed to Danville Saturday for the Class A Region 5 Meet at Admiral Stadium. Thanks to some solid performances, the team was able to finish in a tie for sixth place. The team placed eighth last year.
Some of the top individual performances included Haley DeCandia, who finished second in the high jump for the second year in a row.
Paula Rivera placed second in the discus.

Softball team back on track

A week that began on a sour note finished strong for the Owen County High School softball team.
The Lady Rebels lost their first two games of the week before finishing with wins on Thursday and Saturday.
On May 7, the team traveled to take on Walton-Verona. The Lady Bearcats would score in every inning but the fourth and limit the Lady Rebels to just three hits in the Walton-Verona 7-0 victory. It was the third time this season Owen County has been shutout.
