Council amends annexation ordinances

In the May 22 print edition of the News-Herald, it was reported that the Owenton City Council would repeal five ordinances annexing five roads into the City of Owenton. Shortly after deadline, Owenton Mayor Doug West announced that the council would not repeal the ordinances, but amend them. The following is an updated version of the original story.

Bro. Bill continued in his “Gleanings from Ruth” from chapter 2:1-18 as we looked at being satisfied. We can be satisfied if we walk the simple steps that Ruth walked which includes having right attitude in dealing with our circumstances, instead of looking over fence at what could be. Having right attitude about work-best preparation for work is work and humility. No task is too small. God provides protection, provisions and refuge when we stay in the path of Christ.

Wedding: Prather-Colston

Brittany Leigh Prather and Lawrence Brandon Colston were united in marriage on May 2, 2013, by Owen County Justice of the Peace Teresa Kemper Davis. The witnesses were Denise Smoot and Mary A. Moore.

Maximize your potential and get GED
Now is the time to complete your GED. If you are ready to take the challenge, come to the adult learning center to take the official practice test. The OPT will be given to anyone who signs up to take it.  If you pass the OPT, you will be registered to take the June 12 test in Owen County at no charge.
The OPT will be held Thursday 3 from  4 until 8 p.m, a the library.

Benefits will cost county more

Uncertainty over new federal health-care regulations has Owen County public employees facing a possible 10 to 30 percent increase in the cost of benefits.
The Owen County Fiscal Court approved its 2013-14 budget at a May 14 meeting.
Owen County Judge-executive Carolyn Keith said county employees are currently receiving their health-care benefits from Anthem. A new provider could be chosen in the second half of the fiscal year.

Owen grand jury returns indictments

A fourth person was indicted May 7 on a drug trafficking charge following arrests made by the Owenton City Police last month.
The arrests were part of a three-month investigation into illegal drug dealers and took place on April 17.
Linda Oakley Taylor, 61, was indicted on the charge of second-degree trafficking in a controlled substance, hydrocodone.
The arrests were part of a continued effort to clamp down on illegal drug dealers within the City of Owenton.

Wolfe Greene graduates from University of Evansville

Wolfe Greene of Sparta, has graduated from the University of Evansville with the degree of bachelor of science.
Greene, majoring in physics and mathematics, graduated during UE’s 155th Commencement, held May 4 at the Ford Center in downtown Evansville. During the ceremony, the University awarded 595 degrees to 579 graduates – the largest graduating class in over a decade.

Letter to the editor: Community turned out to support battle against cancer

An estimated 200 people turned out for the Sisters Act Relay for Life Fish Fry that was held Friday night April 26, at the Owen County Fairgrounds.  
I was pleased to see that this many came out on a somewhat chilly evening.  
I thank all who came.  It was good to see folks that I have not seen for awhile and it was good to make some new acquaintances – all who want to fight cancer and to demonstrate their compassion and their support for the cause.

Letter to the editor: Youth and church grateful for chance to learn responsibility

On behalf of Corinth Community Worship Center, we would like to say thank you for the opportunity to serve Owen County.
Our youth group picked up 10 miles of trash that stretched from the county line on Hwy. 330 to the bridge by Duncan Hill.
This was a learning experience for our youth in being responsible and not littering, and they also learned how important it was to work together as a team.
We take pride in knowing that our roads are clean and that we could be a part of it.
