Fisherman finds old meth lab

Three Owen County residents are now in jail after a fisherman recently discovered an abandoned meth lab.
Kentucky State Police Post 5 Public Affairs Officer Brad Arterburn said the lab was discovered May 4 near the intersection of Hwy. 355 and JN Lee Road in Perry Park.
Arterburn said the fisherman reported the lab to state police and Trooper David Staubach was able to determine who the alleged suspects were after finding receipts and trash in the lab.
Warrants were issued for the suspects arrests.

Owen Co. man found guilty of cooking meth

An Owen County man is expected to be sentenced in Owen County Circuit Court next month after he was found guilty of multiple drug charges May 1.
James R. Thomas, 53, was found guilty of manufacturing methamphetamine; possession of a controlled substance, methamphetamine; possession of drug paraphernalia; possession of marijuana; and first-degree persistent felony offender.
According to court documents, Thomas was ordered to vacate the home he shared with his wife Brenda Thomas at 1675 Hwy. 35 on April 20 by Owen County District Court Judge Thomas Funk.

‘Gleanings from the Book of Ruth’ was continued Sunday, looking at Ruth 1:6-22. Bro. Bill shared with us some Christ-like characteristics of Naomi. Naomi was a faithful, committed wife, who did not complain or blame her husband for the situation she was in. She supported and encouraged him.

Owen Farmers’ Market make grand reopening Friday

After a five-month break, the Owen County Farmers’ Market will be back in business Friday with the judge-executive’s office hosting its annual cookout in support of Relay For Life.
Local vendors are expected to gather once again from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. each Friday behind the Kentucky Farm Bureau office, located at 430 Roland Avenue.
Owen County Farmers’ Market President Jim Bush said there will be 15 vendors taking part in this year’s market.

Owen grand jury returns indictments

A fourth person was indicted May 7 on a drug trafficking charge following arrests made by the Owenton City Police last month.
The arrests were part of a three-month investigation into illegal drug dealers and took place on April 17.
Linda Oakley Taylor, 61, was indicted on the charge of second-degree trafficking in a controlled substance, hydrocodone.
The arrests were part of a continued effort to clamp down on illegal drug dealers within the City of Owenton.

NKU names Gayheart Female Freshman Athlete of the Year

Rianna Gayheart, a 2012 graduate of Owen County High School, was recently named Northern Kentucky University’s Female Freshman Athlete of the Year at the NKU athletic banquet.  The award was only awarded to one freshman female and one freshman male from all of the sports teams.  Gayheart was awarded NKU Athlete of the Week on three separate occasions this year, as well as A-Sun Newcomer of the Week twice and A-Sun All Freshman Team.
 

Kay’s Branch News: Back to the Branch

Good morning.
I said I was going to stop writing this column. I just didn’t have anything to say anymore, but several people have called and written to say how much it would be missed, and since I have no excuse except lack of inspiration, which you have now rekindled, I will try again.
This was Derby week in Kentucky. I spent most of it mowing and managed to get all the different patches of grass gone over by the weekend.

Letter to the editor: Community turned out to support battle against cancer

An estimated 200 people turned out for the Sisters Act Relay for Life Fish Fry that was held Friday night April 26, at the Owen County Fairgrounds.  
I was pleased to see that this many came out on a somewhat chilly evening.  
I thank all who came.  It was good to see folks that I have not seen for awhile and it was good to make some new acquaintances – all who want to fight cancer and to demonstrate their compassion and their support for the cause.

Letter to the editor: Youth and church grateful for chance to learn responsibility

On behalf of Corinth Community Worship Center, we would like to say thank you for the opportunity to serve Owen County.
Our youth group picked up 10 miles of trash that stretched from the county line on Hwy. 330 to the bridge by Duncan Hill.
This was a learning experience for our youth in being responsible and not littering, and they also learned how important it was to work together as a team.
We take pride in knowing that our roads are clean and that we could be a part of it.
