Elementary, primary schools merge on paper

Following an unanimous decision by the Owen County Board of Education, the state will now recognize Owen County Primary and Owen County Elementary Schools as one.
The two schools will continue to be housed in their respective buildings, but Owen County School Superintendent Rob Stafford said the schools will be recognized by the state as one school, with one principal and one site-based decision-making council.
Stafford said consolidating the two schools seemed like the logical thing to do.

Council pulls permit

Due to violation of Kentucky state law, the Owenton City Council moved to reject the original sign permit granted to Family Billiards and Restaurant in 2011.
Owenton Mayor Doug West said City Attorney Mitzi Evans advised the council to make the motion.
“The planning and zoning ordinance went into effect last July when it was all brought up to date and now, we cannot legally issue a permit for a sign off premises,” West said. “It has to be on your property.”

Owen County official offers tips for tornado safety

Every state is at some risk of tornadoes and the damage that they leave behind. Some tornadoes are clearly visible, while rain or nearby low-hanging clouds may obscure others.
Occasionally, tornadoes develop so rapidly that little, if any, advance warning is possible.
To begin preparing for any disaster, you should build an emergency kit and make a family communications plan.

One mile at a time

On June 14, motorcycle riders are encouraged to gather at the Thornhill Baptist Church parking lot on Holmes Street across from the Family Dollar Shopping Center in Frankfort at 4:45 p.m.
The Sisters Act Owen County Relay for Life team will host a charity fund-raising motorcycle ride that will end up at the Owen County Relay For Life event.
The ride departs at 5:15 p.m. toward the Owen County Park, which is located on the northern side of Owenton on Fairgrounds Road.

Board looks to milk property to aid students

The Owen County High School Agricultural Department may be growing.
The members of the Owen County Board of Education discussed the future of 111 acres of farmland the district owns.
Owen County School District Director of Maintenance Dan Logan said some members of the high school faculty want to expand the agriculture opportunities.
“The agriculture department here wants to try to expand and develop an agricultural research farm,” Logan said.

Rotary contest winners

On March 12, five Owen County High School students participated in the Owenton Rotary Club’s Annual Speech Contest held at the Owen County High School.
While this was all of these contestants first time public speaking, no one would be able to tell.
All the contestants demonstrated tremendous speaking skills.
The contest required each contestant to prepare and memorize a five to 10 minute speech on the topic of ‘Peace Through Service,’ which is also the Rotary Club’s international motto.

Kay’s Branch News: Fried fish, big fish and a few farewells

Everything is gray and damp this morning. I went out to put the mail in the box and checked the rain gauge. We had 8/10 of an inch last night.
Fay said they got all the hay they had cut rolled by Wednesday, so they did some shopping at Carrollton toward the end of the week.
She said there were a lot of sales going on there. They went to the big nursery there where they ran into Mr. and Mrs. Smith, who live on top of the cliff across from Old Cedar Church.
