Summer sends Owen County teens...

It’s summer time and kids everywhere are beginning to look for their chance to make it in the workforce.
But in Owen County, even with an unemployment rate of 6.4 percent, finding that summer job might have some at a loss.
According to NBC News, teenagers are going to have their work cut out for them landing summer jobs in this market. They will be competing against older individuals who already have experience under their belts.

Every state is at some risk of tornadoes and the damage that they leave behind. Some tornadoes are clearly visible, while rain or nearby low-hanging clouds may obscure others.

Council pulls permit

Due to violation of Kentucky state law, the Owenton City Council moved to reject the original sign permit granted to Family Billiards and Restaurant in 2011.
Owenton Mayor Doug West said City Attorney Mitzi Evans advised the council to make the motion.
“The planning and zoning ordinance went into effect last July when it was all brought up to date and now, we cannot legally issue a permit for a sign off premises,” West said. “It has to be on your property.”

Best at the bee

The Owen County Primary School first-grade spelling bee was recently held. The winners were Allison Hughes, first place; Chayce Merchant, second place and Hallie Risch, third place.

Thirty-two contestants representing local scholarship  pageants from across the state will be vying for the title of Miss Kentucky  2013 and this year one of the semi-finalists will be determined by the  public, rather than the panel of judges.

5-6 p.m., Survivor registration (in front of the extension building)
5:45-6:45 p.m., Survivor reception dinner (inside extension building)
6:45 p.m., Campsite judging and silent auction begins
7 p.m., Survivor photo (all survivors should meet at the bleachers for survivor photo)
7-7:30 p.m., Opening ceremony
7:45 p.m., Survivor lap (survivor recognition and walk of fame -- all teams, friends and family will line the track to honor the survivors and cheer them around the track)

One mile at a time

On June 14, motorcycle riders are encouraged to gather at the Thornhill Baptist Church parking lot on Holmes Street across from the Family Dollar Shopping Center in Frankfort at 4:45 p.m.
The Sisters Act Owen County Relay for Life team will host a charity fund-raising motorcycle ride that will end up at the Owen County Relay For Life event.
The ride departs at 5:15 p.m. toward the Owen County Park, which is located on the northern side of Owenton on Fairgrounds Road.

Centennial celebration

Wilma Smith, who taught three generations of Owen contains during a 50-year career, will celebrate her 100th birthday on June 16.
Known to her students as “Miss Wilma,” she will be honored with a party at the home of her daughter, Joyce Hill Hardin, in Springfield on the 16th  from 2 to 4 p.m.
