It is said that you always want to end on a positive note. The
Owen County baseball team did just that last week. After dropping
two straight contests to open the week, the Rebels bounced back
to defeat Walton-Verona on Thursday.
Owen County opened up the week with a home game against Carroll
County. Jamie Giles had a pair of hits and an RBI in the game
but it was not enough as the Panthers came away with the 6-3
victory.
Two runs in the bottom of the first inning gave the Rebels a
2-0 lead. Giles drove in a run with a single and Brody Layton
drew a bases-loaded walk to score the other Rebels’ run
in the inning. The Panthers scored a run in the second and then
added four more in the fifth. A Matt Harris homerun in the bottom
of the fifth cut the Carroll County lead to 5-3. The visitors
tacked on another run in the sixth and held on for the win.
For the Rebels it would again be errors that, according to Coach
Webster, led to the defeat.
The team then traveled to South Oldham on April 29. Not much
went right for the Rebels as the Dragons won the game 7-1.
Owen County returned home on Thursday for a game with the Bearcats
from Walton-Verona. Owen County got on the board early as they
scored three runs in the top of the first. Layton had a RBI-hit
in the inning.
Michael Ogden took advantage of the early lead and took things
from there. As the Bearcats came to the plate in the seventh,
Ogden had not allowed any runs or hits. The visitors did manage
a hit in the inning as well as a walk. Jordan Cox then entered
the game in an effort to preserve the win. He did just that,
thanks in part to a fine defensive play in the inning. The Bearcats
scored two runs in the inning, however, a defensive gem by Justin
Stevens and Stone Osborne turned a squeeze attempt by Walton-Verona
into a double-play, which wrapped up the 3-2 win.
Owen County was at home last night as they hosted Anderson County.
The Rebels will travel to Scott County today before heading
to Western Hills on Thursday. The team will then hit the road
on Saturday as they bus to Henry County to take part in the
NCKC Tournament.
