STLP
state championship
held
today
The Student
Technology Leadership Program (STLP) State Championship is being
held today at the Lexington Convention Center and Rupp Arena.
More than 4,300 adults and students are expected at the event,
with 94 school districts and 310 schools represented. This event
provides K-12 students from across the state with opportunities
to present their projects to people outside their classrooms.
Some of the best STLP projects in the state are on display. The
items range from community service projects to entrepreneurial
activities.
MBMS will have three showcase groups that were featured earlier
this year in the News-Herald. Along with 28 other students, they
compete in this state competition.
In addition to projects, students are bringing digital music,
video, writing and art products. The students are competing in
many areas of technology during live demonstrations, presentations
and panels.
The event is unique because students take on major roles during
the event. Students will serve as STLP “Engineers and Buddies,”
produce the awards program and serve as cyber-reporters. Universities,
school districts, and community and national organizations provide
judges and learning experiences for the students during the event.
Also, during the competition, a new STLP alumni Web site was be
unveiled – www.stlpalumni.org. The site’s purpose
is to celebrate the achievements of former STLP students as they
leave school and move on to higher education and careers. A team
of STLP students from South Floyd High School in Floyd County
designed the site and will receive a special STLP Project Award
for their work. Henry Hunt of the Kentucky Dataseam Initiative
provided guidance to the South Floyd team in implementing the
site. Dataseam operates one of the largest managed computing grids
in the world. By harnessing the untapped computing power sitting
throughout Kentucky’s K-12 schools and businesses, the Dataseam
computing grid allows researchers to access much-needed computing
capabilities to forward research and commercialization of ideas.
STLP is a project-based learning program that empowers students
in all grade levels to use technology to learn and achieve. It
was established in 1994 by the STLP State Advisory Council, which
is composed of teachers, students and community leaders. The program
is open to all students in all grade levels in every school in
Kentucky.
FFA
sets statewide
membership
record
The Owen
County FFA Chapter has great news. The local chapter had the highest
percent increase in membership out of all FFA chapters in the
state of Kentucky for the 2007-2008 school year. The chapter increased
its membership from 32 members last year to 84 this year, accounting
for over a 200-percent increase in membership. The annual state
contest for membership will award the chapter with a steak dinner
for the officers in appreciation of their hard work as well as
recognition at the State FFA Convention in Louisville.
The news comes at an exciting time for the chapter as they gear
up for FFA Week at OCHS. FFA president Brittney Denny has led
the charge to organize an exciting week of activities at OCHS.
Yesterday was Farmer Day at the high school. Students were asked
to dress in their best farming attire. Prizes were awarded to
the best dressed “Farmer” and “Farmer-ette.”
Today, the FFA will be hosting Blue and Gold day where students
have been encouraged to wear Blue and Gold in representation of
the National FFA Organization’s official colors. Members
with official dress will be asked to wear that on this day, as
well. In addition, the chapter will be having the first annual
FFA Teacher Appreciation Lunch at the high school. Members will
serve the teachers lunch in the Ag Shop. Thursday will be “Favorite
Tractor Day.” Students will vote at lunch to finally end
the debate of which type of tractor Owen County loves. They will
also be asked to wear attire that supports their favorite tractors.
Closing out the week on Friday, FFA will have a Muddy Truck Contest.
Prizes will be awarded to the first, second and third muddiest
vehicles.
At the end of the day on Friday, the first annual FFA Barnyard
Rally will play host to the inaugural “FFA Pedal Tractor
Rally.” Representatives from each grade, as well as faculty,
will race to see which is the most dominant. In addition, winners
from the week’s contests will be announced and awarded with
prizes/trophies/etc.

advisor Garrick Howell.
