  • Letter to the editor: Few statesmen remain in our country today

    Recently I overheard a local gentleman advise his friend not to allow his children to “go too far to the left or too far to the right, but instead keep them in the middle.”
    That, my friends, is what has happened in our country. Not willing to offend anyone we have become lukewarm middle of the road Christians.
    Christ has a few words to say about lukewarm Christianity. “So, then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spew you out of my mouth.” (Revelation 3:16)

  • Postal Service had little choice on its decision

    With a multibillion dollar deficit, it appears there was little the U.S. Postal Service could do to thwart its plan to discontinue Saturday mail delivery.
    The Postal Service announced last week that beginning in August, mail would be delivered to homes and businesses only Monday through Friday, but would still be delivered to post office boxes on Saturdays. Post offices would remain open on Saturdays.
    The cutback is expected to save the agency $2 billion annually.

  • County Clerk Corner: I’m losing sleep over districting

    What do you think about when you find yourself unable to sleep and looking up at the ceiling in the middle of the night?
    I sometimes think that during this time, I do my best thinking on issues.
    Since the beginning of the year, I have been thinking about changes that are going to have an impact on the Owen County Clerk’s office in 2013 and 2014.
    Questions such as:
    • Will the redistricting be done in 2013 or 2014?
    • Will we be able to get all the maps and description changes done and approved on time?

  • I’m just saying ... Legalizing hemp could be a boon to Owen farmers

    Americans are good at a lot of things but one trait that seems to run through most of our history is the ability to turn a bad situation to our advantage through innovation and a willingness to look outside the box.
    The weak economy and the deterioration of the tobacco market has opened the door for Kentucky farmers to once again start raising hemp as a lucrative cash crop.

  • I’m just saying ... No redistricting means Thayer will stay in Owen County for now

    It’s what they call a short session at the General Assembly.
    Since the state’s legislature started holding annual meetings instead of every two years, the odd numbered years have been limited to 30 days instead of 90.
    The state faces a lot of problems and 30 days doesn’t seem like a lot of time to address them in any realistic way.
