  • Republican candidates for House share views at Smith House

Republican U.S. House candidates Gary Moore and Marcus Carey of Owen County addressed the Owen County Republican Party meeting at the Smith House Restaurant March 1.
Boone County Judge-executive Moore said he expected most people from Owen County would vote for one of their own, Marcus Carey, but he hoped they would vote for him.
Moore said he is a conservative, and very conservative Boone County has elected him many times, and he’s conservative on both fiscal and social issues.

  • Letter to the editor: Let there be a lesson

God did a good job creating Whitney Houston. She was beautiful, smart, and talented. At least, she reportedly sold 170 million records.
But somebody “hooked” her on drugs, I’m told. Someone, they say, taught that bright young lady to like alcohol. Wouldn’t you hate to be that first “somebody” that introduced Whitney to drugs and alcohol? And, wouldn’t it be awful to have given (sold) her the last dose?

    David Raleigh

Not originally being from Owen County, we were very excited about the opportunity to participate in Leadership Owen County. • Letter to the editor: Faith and economy should be linked

Although I understand that city council has decided not to pursue the reclassification of the city of Owenton, I would like to address comments made by Curtis Sigretto in the Feb. 8 issue of the News-Herald.
Mr. Sigretto supports the reclassification and gave several reasons for his stand. He stated that reclassification should not be a religious decision but instead more of an economic decision.
The word “economy” is defined in Webster’s Dictionary as: the frugal and judicious management of land, family, money, business, or government.

  • Letter to the editor: U.S. House candidate to visit public at Smith House Thursday

We are recruiting candidates for Geoff Davis’ Congressional seat to come to Owenton to meet our residents and answer your questions.
This is an important election and we should meet the candidates.
The first to accept our invitation is Thomas Massie.  He is 40-years old, an electrical and mechanical engineer and businessman.

  • Guest Column: Annual tournament honors Satterwhite’s legacy

We are proud to announce that we have set a date for our 12th annual Charlie Satterwhite Memorial Golf Shamble.  This year’s tournament will take place on Saturday, March 31st at Fairway Golf Course in Wheatley.  Your participation over these past eleven years has been greatly appreciated.  Your efforts have allowed us to raise over $110,000 for our two charitable organizations.

  • Letter to the editor: No pot of gold at the end of a rainbow

We now have a month of 2012 gone and most our New Year’s resolutions already broken. I was driving on several county roads the other day and reflecting on Owen County’s past and thinking of our future.
As I drove and thought of all the personal agendas of various folks in Owen County and those from the outside that do and would take advantage of our citizens, I ask myself a question – Is there hope for our county?
