  • Think before buying a pet

    Before buying your child or spouse a dog or cat for Christmas, please be aware that you can adopt a dog or cat from a shelter, Friends for Animals or Petsmart. They will also be spayed or neutered, wormed and up-to-date on shots. There are so many strays out there that need a home. Why purchase an animal form a breeder when there are cold, starving animals that will be destroyed or put to sleep if they can’t find a home.

    What is your opinion of the news in Owen County?

    For decades, people have been able to react to stories and issues through the local newspaper’s Letter to the Editor section.

    From my standpoint, getting a letter from a reader is always exciting. It’s kinda like getting a credit-card bill after a long vacation. You’re never sure if you want to open it because it could either be great news or very, very bad news.

    Generally, I treat letters to the editor as an opportunity to learn something.

  • The Golden Gobble Awards

    It seems like every time you turn on the television there is another awards show. There are the AMAs, the CMAs and the PCAs (not the Politically Correct Awards, but rather the People’s Choice Awards).

    In the spirit of award shows and Thanksgiving, I have come up with what I am calling the Golden Gobble Awards. These awards are for those individuals or groups who have acted like the biggest turkeys in 2008.

  • Only in Owenton

    One of the most striking things I have discovered about Owen County is how much Owen County people love Owen County.

    I would hazard to say that most people love their hometown. But the devotion that people here have about their home seems particularly intense.

    I stopped by Sav-A-Lot on my way home last week. My wife was visiting family in Corbin and I just needed a few things.

    For the record, I hate grocery shopping. I either wanted to grab an 8-pound steak or I shuffle through the aisles for 45 minutes wondering if Captain Crunch can be considered an entree.

  • Veteran moved and impressed by service at high school

    I enlisted in the Marine Corps at the age of 17 and served four years during World War II. After being honorably discharged, I returned home and met my wife, Jackie, who was two-years younger than I and still in school.

    We went to her prom, and it turned out to be the longest prom date in history, as we eloped that very evening. We enjoyed 59 years and 9 months together before Jackie passed away in January last year. Soon after, I moved to Owen County and became a permanent resident in Perry Park Country Club.

  • Garvey family appreciates classmates

    The family of Eric Garvey would like to take this opportunity to let the OCHS Class of 1988 know how appreciative we are for the living memorial in Eric’s, and other fallen classmates, memory.

    We were blessed when we read the paper and saw the pictures from the 20-year high school reunion.

    Eric would have been pleased to have known you had remembered him in such a special way.

  • Volunteers made Veterans Day very special

    I would like to submit the following about our Veterans Day activities Nov. 11.

    There were several people who were responsible for putting it together who deserve recognition. Several students were involved in the activity.
