Today's Opinions

  • Letter to the Editor: Alcohol only creates problems

People, generally, do not desire facts. We are motivated through emotion. Our strongest emotion is fear. Many Americans are afraid that one dollar will “crash,” that the price of gas will ruin us, etc. We lack wisdom.
So what am I talking about? A healthy fear. “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” God knows “the end from the beginning,” and everything between. God cares for us.

  • Democrats should help override vetoes

During the special session last week, the Senate created a responsible approach to solving the Medicaid budget shortfall. The House of Representatives agreed with the Senate plan and the bill was sent to Gov. Steve Beshear’s desk. However, late Friday, March 25, the governor vetoed all of the important accountability provisions and is now left with an unrestricted checkbook combined with an unlimited credit card funded with your tax dollars.

  • Senate Republicans ready for veto

The taxpayer scored a legislative victory this week when the House passed the Senate’s Medicaid budget proposal during the current special session.
Throughout the course of the Medicaid debate, the Governor and the Secretary of Health and Family Services have both been adamant that they can come up with $139 million in efficiencies and managed care to fill the Medicaid budget shortfall over the upcoming fiscal year. In the Senate, we feel it is our responsibility to trust, but verify their assumptions.

  • Letter to the editor: Plenty of problems will come with more alcohol sales

I just wanted to give my opinion on making our county wet.
I would hope we keep it dry.
Those who are for it tell us it will mean more money for the county and they are probably right, but they don’t tell us it will mean more paperwork for the county, more law enforcement, more jail space to be paid for. It will also lead to more broken homes, more accidents and more deaths.
    Is it worth it?
I would call on all church and county leaders to voice their opinion. I would hope they will vote “no” if it comes to a vote.

  • Letter to the editor: Help make Easter special for elderly and youth

Once again Owenton Manor residents will host the annual community Easter egg hunt on April 9.
The rain date will be for the following Saturday. Each year our residents stuff plastic eggs with candy and surprises for children 12-and-under to find. We need your help in providing enough candy to fill the eggs.
You can contact us or leave your donation of candy, prizes of anything at the activity department. We want to thank you for your support.

  • Letter to the editor: People should unite against wet vote

I would like to express my opinion about making Owen County a wet county.
I think we need to put our trust in God to meet our needs and not depend of the sale of liquor to bring in more revenue.
The sale of liquor only causes more problems where it is sold or consumed.
Do you want saloons up and down Main Street to ruin our town?
Why spend thousands of dollars to get it on the ballot?
Let’s stand united and stop it before it goes any further. We need to think about our children so we can bring them up in a more respectable environment.

  • Technology continues to change county clerk’s office

The routine world of regulations, laws, and practices, accompanied by legislation, court decisions and  agreements’ have led to changes in the Owen County Clerk’s Office.

  • Letter to the Editor: More alcohol won’t help Owen County

Many are concerned about the future of Owen County, the education of our children, and the hope of local jobs when they grow up — and at the same time – holding to our rural roots.
In trying to do this, there needs to be a tax-base and industry to provide money and opportunity for all this to happen. Many different people worked to get the gas line to the industrial park, don’t give up on that.
