  • Letter to the editor: Jesus was pro gun

In recent months we have heard a lot about the right to keep and bear arms. What is our duty as Christian Americans in regard to this important matter?

  • Letter to the editor: Changes made at school to enhance student safety

We know that everyone has been really concerned about school safety since the Newtown tragedy. Be assured that OCES is continuously thinking about our students’ safety. Owen County Elementary School practices emergency situations throughout the year.
When our SBDM committee last met, the committee agreed on the modification of a few procedures that stood out as concerns. Below, we have bulleted the changes or modifications that will be implemented as of Feb. 1.
    As of Feb. 1:

  • Letter to the editor: Volunteers were quick to respond

I would like to say thank you to the Owen County Volunteer Fire Department.
They came to our house on Sunday, Jan. 13, in the cold, rainy weather. They were  at our house in less than one minute from the time we called 911 and had the  fire under control within minutes.
So if you see a fireman make sure you say thank you for all they do. I know I will.
    Again, thanks so much.

  • Letter to the editor: Office looks for ways to better serve

With the soaring cost of running state and county government offices, there are many cutbacks being made. Across Kentucky, the county clerk’s offices struggle to handle personnel, consumer services and operating costs into their working schedules, it sometimes becomes a decision between hours of service offered and the number of staff. Both state and county governments are searching for a solution to the dilemma.

  • I'm just saying: Just because you can doesn't mean you should

There is an old saying in journalism that I used to share with the reporters and photographers. I usually applied it to people retouching pictures with Photoshop.
“Just because you can doesn’t mean you should,” I would tell them.
That axiom couldn’t have been more true than a couple of weeks ago when a New York area newspaper published an on-line interactive map of registered gun owners in parts of their coverage area.
The paper obtained the names and addresses through normal public records requests.

  • I’m just saying ... A few thoughts as 2012 wraps up and 2013 arrives

I’m great at making New Year’s resolutions.
I stink at keeping New Year’s resolutions.
Almost every year, I publicly proclaim that I will do this or that or stop doing that thing I shouldn’t be doing in the first place.
And each year, it seems like I make a long list of resolutions just to watch them fall by the wayside either by apathy, personal weakness or my unyielding opposition to change.
Of the six resolutions I made last year, I managed to keep three of them.

  • Letter to the editor: Churches must get involved in 'battle'

I would like to respond to Bro. Tom Hall’s editorial of Dec. 12, 2012.
Tom, thank you for your wonderful editorial which exposed the terrible sin of sodomy. As you stated, Christians and the churches need to get involved in the battle. The greatness and stability of America began with the Pilgrim separatists and the Puritans. These Christians were committed to establishing the kingdom of Jesus Christ on the Earth.

  • Letter to the editor: Everyone benefits from shopping locally

How great would be to have a Walmart in Owen County so you can get everything you need for the upcoming holiday with ease?
Sadly, we don’t have one of those but what we do have is a chain of local businesses that may be able to provide us with things that are on our grocery lists. The nearest Walmart is located in Dry Ridge and that’s a lot of wasted gas money just to go and buy needed supplies.
